i almost wish the water was a bit lighter so i could see all the delicious subtleties in the murkiness…........ love the twig across her foot… whatson the end of it thomas???? beautiful work…. imagine…...........b
Thomas Dodd replied
Sometimes it is precisely the murkiness of the water that inspires change… thank you as always Butch!

and I’m only scared of one thing – change.
Wonderful piece of art. She looks unsure of us watching her.
Thomas Dodd replied
Thank you Jo -I think there is definitely a voyeuristioc feel to this as well (but then again – I think all art is voyeuristic!)
aglaia b
very poetic, so many metaphors

Lovely Chrysalis… your delicate brushwork is superb, and I love that background. Beautiful skilled work as always Master Dodd
Thomas Dodd replied
Thank you Madame – although it was more clonestamp work than brushwork – but I suppose it is the same thing (in a way!)
vonne
Love This Thomas! Very True words my dear.
Thomas Dodd replied
Thanks Vonne
and yeah – the Buddah is very quotable… (as is David Bowie!)
pinkyjain
Beautiful, love the darkness surrounding here with the subtle colors from the foliage. She looks reluctant to change, holding onto her skin for dear life, change is very hard, but even if its painful, we all gotta do it
Thomas Dodd replied
Thank you as always Pinky!

your so deep….......

beautifully surreral…yes…change is constant…the fabric seems cocoon like. is she emerging or receding…
Thomas Dodd replied
Thanks Giovanni – I can see the ambiguity as well… (or maybe not… ;P)

I just… love it… Thomas… More than that… your imgaes.. and spcially this one… tell me much more about my moods thatn any others I can see… They have the elements of my true soul…the essence of my pursuit…. which is not always easy to understand.. not by myself.
I can see that soeone has said that owould have liket it a little brighter in order to see the “subtleties” of the water.. It may be right.. but I have this problem too… whenever I post a picture… in this site.. or other.. the light decreases.. and when your relationship between the dark and the high lighs are critical… ou suffer becaue you loose many of the definition and textures.. Have you noticed it before? Today i had to delete a picture I had posted and re-upload it.. with a litle more light… and sometimes you can´t do it.. because then your high lights start to burn.
I love the colour.. the shade.. the figure all centered.. the Nature in bloom.. mystic and intimate… her countenance so shy… the garment… the wonderul appereance of her feet.. Have ever oone thought how beautiful feet are…? I love feet.
I love it!!

The thing about posting images on the net is that monitor resolution varis greatly from computer to computer. I can always tell who has their resolution set too dark by the comments I get…. The folks who havve high-res flat screens and use the “daylight” setting seem to see evertthing as I intended…I always use the info pallette and the curves tool to make sure that I have the correct amount of halftone dots in my blacks and darker colors… In fact, I am writing a tutorial for Graphic Editing 101 on this very same subject!
Alisa Gonzalez
Rosa, i just noticed that on one of mine as well. I have an image uploaded here and on deviantArt and the lighting is significantly different. I thought i was the only one that had the problem.
Thomas Dodd replied
Bandwidth and file compression is more than likely the culprit- Deviant Art displays very large file sizes. and although you can upload a very large file here – the display is rather tiny
etta
Beautiful, Thomas. The emerging from a chrysalis, such is life. Humans often hesitate, although…we too…long to fly.
Thomas Dodd replied
Thank you Etta – usually it is by letting go of the past that we learn how to fly…. or sink trying!

Fantastic work Thomas…very thought provoking!

Excellent work of art Thomas! The lighting of her expression, the hand, the foot, perfecton as always!
Thomas Dodd replied
Thanks Maestro!
(I’m putting the finishing touches on my first club tutorial too!)
marshall calve...
yes Thomas and thank goodness for if we don’t change we stagnate, the pose goes so well with the model and then she blends so well with the background, it’s like she is emerging from her shell.
Thomas Dodd replied
Thank you kindly Marshall!

I collect skins once they’ve been shed… I believe in keeping the environment clean and recycling anything even remotely salvageable… ;-) I love the overlays, textures and overall concept of this one, the analogy of a human being undergoing the process of metamorphosis like the life cycle of the butterfly… which, when you come to think of it, makes the plain ole caterpillar far more a remarkable creature than any of us… lol… I’m getting lost within the earthy tones and atmosphere of your painting… I’m out of here, before I transform into something I can’t control… :-P
Thomas Dodd replied
So I guess that means you’re kind of an Ed Gein of the post-Hippy generation then eh?
Thank you as always for the thoughtful words Ms B

Geoff Coleman...
whoa – pre-raphaelite or what!! – my favourite art genre. And what a worthy addition to the canon. Beautiful texture and layer work and I particularly like the worried expression on her face like “how did I get here?”
Thomas Dodd replied
Thanks Geoff – I do tend to go for that Pre-Raphaelite feel quite a bit when I work with Halley (the model in this portrait)- she lends herself quite nicely to it !...
Theresa Rankin
Your work is always so penetrating, Thomas! Another fabulous piece!!!
Thomas Dodd replied
Thank you kindly Theresa!

beautiful use of color here, especially with the reds, as the tones in her hair are echoed in the background above her head and down by her foot…beautiful reflective quality to the model as well as the background appearing to reflect down as if water. I love it that just her foot is poking out the bottom instead of what most people would do (a full sexy leg is what i mean….you know just when to stop and what is overkill). The textures here are awesome, from the skin to the background. as usual, great work, Thomas. such a raw expression, you have great and talented models as well.
Thomas Dodd replied
Thanks DA – Halley really is a great mdel to work with because she is also an artist and knows the kind of work I am referencing in my photos… A lot of models just pout, preen, and try to look sexy – but Halley conveys so much more emotion with a single gaze!
gypsycaster
OOOoooh! I really like her!
As usual I dig your layering, but there is a sort of blur of light to her that makes her seem almost “in between” that strikes the heart a bit. Like we’ve caught her between what she wants us to see and what she truly is. That’s a voulnerable moment.
Amazing work!
Thomas Dodd replied
Thanks gypsycaster!

It will be very interesting, Thomas… I am not very “read” about all this,, but my taste and eyes are keen to see the differences. It is very difficult to adjust this screen light and tone with the others… And it is really difficult too to adjust the tone in order toprint the photos correctly in your own printer. Ours is always darker… I will be eager to know a little more about this. Now that you tell me I am going to check out what sort of light and tone we havve in this computer. The scren is flat… Imac 24. And I like a bright tone.. and do not like the tones shading to gold for I cannot play with colder tones with it… hanks for using your time for such a valuable information.
Have a hug..
Rosa
RosaCobos
HI..
Another thing..
It is not that I see other´s pics in different tones. or brighter or lower… that I cannot tell… expcept if the person has told me something about my comment.
It is the fact that I send my pics to a program ,, I photo for example and the settings change.. I send it to RB and change.. and send it to other site and they change.. but I am talking from own monitor vision…. this is the difficulty… and many a times I have to change the pic for another one… once i have realized that it is dark… and it even chanes it.. wether is in thumb nail or greater size.. that is of course understandable. We use a Huey of Pantone.. a calibratotr which makes different lighting depending on the light around… so it may not affect to your own eyes… It is difficut… really. Well… Do you know I have loved very much your pic?... so… I tell you twice.. and for me.. the lighting is perfect…. Besides that who is one to tell the creator which lighting should he or she use?.... Too much subtetlies… that are not in our hands to mend… or change.
Rosa
Carlos Solorza
this is such a fantastic image Thomas. seems that she may perhaps be heading deeper into the shelter of the moist darkness as she takes one last look while pulling her cocoon closed. hmm, how will she emerge…
Thomas Dodd replied
Thanks Carlos – that is an interesting take on it and now that you mention it – I can totally see that!
