Daddy's Girl
...
The wounded part of her
is sealed with his abandonment
buried deep inside
and still she feels his disapproval
She seeks it in a million men
she rejects them like he rejected her
and still she remains
the little girl whose love was twisted
all those years ago
(dedicated to my ex)

Thomas Dodd in reply to Yvonne Emerson’s comment, 8 days ago
Vonne – this was a difficult one for me to do as well… it just kind of evolved into this theme and made me think of some unpleasant memories with my ex… but in a strange way – I think she would love this piece….

Thanks Keith…

pinkyjain, 8 days ago
very emotional. Poor soul looks so distraught & in such pain. and the Dog in the window, has a devilish look about him. Brilliant piece. Even though we carry baggage with us into relationships & can’t leave the suitcases outside the door it still hurts when we hurt our new partners even tho we try not to
butchart, 8 days ago
sorry i called you a puppy dog…...........b
Thomas Dodd in reply to Laurie McClave’s comment, 8 days ago
That’s ok my dear – you know I’m a good listener…
;D
Thomas Dodd in reply to pinkyjain’s comment, 8 days ago
Thanks Pinky – thanks so much and you are right – we ALL have baggage – it’s just a matter of how heavy it is – Some luggage is just not totable!
Psssst – that dog in the window is me…
;P
Thomas Dodd in reply to butchart’s comment, 8 days ago
Ha ha Butch – no offense taken – I did one of those “hold the flashlight under your face” shots for that pic so I know I don’t exactly look fetching! (mmmm – “go fetch”?!)

A lonely piece, Thomas.
Abandonment. Rejection.
The hurt as a child is something that does not quite heal.
And so…it is herself she holds…
Often, a comfortless comfort…
Such a lonely piece, Thomas.

A bit different spin from your usual ‘unique’ style Thomas! The purple/blue hues are marvelous….....I love this work very much….............
Andromedae, 8 days ago
Thomas, this is such an emotional piece, I can see it brought a lot of resonance in other people, most of it has been said already, just want to add a little. in every one of us still lives this little girl, who wants to hide so no one else can find her and see a pain in her eyes, when no matter how hard she tries, she still thinks it is not good enough. I think it often happens to a girl, who was a first child, when daddy wanted a boy.
Without reading the words, it is applicable to everyone. But I do sence a hope, for she turned away, as if she is trying to get free from that pain and guilt.
Krisso, 8 days ago
It’s work like this that motivates me to taking photos! Thanks for the inspiration mate!... Awesome!
Yvonne Emerson, 8 days ago
Thomas I have no doubt she would love as much as I do. Its an awesome work of art and emotion. Without all the trials life throws our way, all the challenges, disappointments, pain, and losses. without having to struggle and overcome all of these things. I do not think we would appreciate all the good things we recieve…at least not as much. I think it would just be taken for granted. Perhaps I am wrong but I know personally I try very hard to let the people I love and care for know how I feel. Having lost 2 very important people in my life at such a young age it made me truly appreciate the gifts/people I have in my life. So although this is painful. It also is a reminder of all the above and that I got through it and learned to love and even trust. I hope you do more like this. You did it very well. {{ hugs}} V

Wow this is so powerful and emotive. I found myself having to stare at it for quite some time. Impressive work…
Geoff Coleman, 8 days ago
Beautiful and emotive piece this Thomas. I’m afraid the figure in the window does look like a dog but in a way that gives it an interesting surreal touch. This made me think of an alternative compositional scenario where instead of having her head down she’s looking over her shoulder (literally and metaphorically) to the character who so dominates her emotional life, arms by her side with one hand clenched and the other with fingers splayed to heighten the tension.

Stirring and powerful Thomas
darkestartist, 8 days ago
the depth is amazing, both figurative and literal. your prose is an exquisite fit to the piece, and this one actually made me gasp. Love the textures as always, and I confess, I looked for text and book parts…;)

Thomas Dodd in reply to whisperingruth’s comment, 8 days ago
Thanks Ruth – I tend to go through “phases” in my work – so maybe I’ll do more of this kind of larger scale scenery assemblage type thing (and truth be told – Charles WInslow’s latest work has been quite influential as well!)
Thomas Dodd in reply to Andromedae’s comment, 8 days ago
That’s a pretty interesting and accurate take (at least I think so!) Andromedae – I once did a piece called “The Inner Child isn’t Always Pretty” and I think a lot of those feelings of rejection and inadequacy get burned into our subconcious at an early age. I also think that acknowledging it and identifying the pattern is the first step to excorising it from our behaviour…
Thomas Dodd in reply to Krisso’s comment, 8 days ago
Krisso – always glad to be of inspiration man – you are such an encouraging positive soul – thank you as always!
Thomas Dodd in reply to Yvonne Emerson’s comment, 8 days ago
Yvonne – you are someone who I think we can all learn from – just the things you told me about how you make your marriage last should be written down – it would be a must-have book!
There is too much negative crap passing as advice from all the Dr. Phils and Lauras of the world… Sometimes all the psychobabble and 12 Step platitudes obscure the fact that leading a happy healthy life is really quite easy – you just treat people the way you want to be treated (just like Mom said!) and if they want to be an asshole in response – you find someone who will appreciate it!
Thomas Dodd in reply to Amanda Hammock’s comment, 8 days ago
Thank you kindly Ms. Hammock!

Wonderful Thomas. So many people could relate to this and gain comfort from it. Excellent work as always. May I ask who or what is at the window, it looks like a fox or a wolf but I can’t make it out? Not important as far as the image is concerned but I am just intrigued!

Thomas Dodd in reply to Liesl Yvette Wilson’s comment, 7 days ago
Thanks Liesl – I wanted to convey someone who was more emotionally wounded than an outright abuse victim… although I think the line between the two is not so delineated or absolute…

Thanks Stewart!
Thomas Dodd in reply to Ariane’s comment, 7 days ago

Thomas Dodd in reply to janrique’s comment, 7 days ago
janrique, I suppose it is now a general consensus that I am the “Doggy in the window” – I have been told several times that I have very lupine/wolven features so I guess that gives this piece a more predator/prey feel…
Thank you as always my dear – now I’m going to go bury my bone in the garden…..

Kim Hart, 4 days ago
That’s messed up, but in a realistic and relatable way where you’re not sure cuz of all the emotion in the picture or cuz you’ve been there at some point in life with someone/something. Hard to leave the past behind you.
Love the fact that it’s hard to tell how you did this picture. Seems parts are so clear they look photographed; other parts look done by hand.
