The Downy Woodpecker, Picoides pubescens, is the smallest woodpecker in North America.

Their breeding habitat is forested areas, mainly deciduous, across most of North America to Central America. They nest in a tree cavity excavated by the nesting pair in a dead tree or limb.

Photographed in Wapwallopen, Pennsylvania.

  • Thank you Barb! I do enjoy the woodpeckers… they aren’t around as much as our other locals… They are a little shy so I was pleased to get this one ! I appreciate you taking the time to comment: :0)
