Echidna
An Echidna, an Australian native and who shares a unique trait with just one other animal, the Platypus.
They’re both monotremes, meaning they lay eggs and they have a pouch like a kangaroo.
The female Echidna will usually lay just one egg and deposit it in her pouch. When the young echidna, called a puggle, hatches, it suckles from teats in the pouch until it’s grown spines at which time mum thinks it’s a little uncomfortable and digs a nursery burrow for it.
The adults eat ants and termites digging for them with strong claws and then sucking them up with a sticky tongue. mmm yum!!

This is such a super shot – so clear with excellent detail yet natural looking, as we have become echidnas.
Bob Wickham replied 27 days ago
thanks Rachael, they’re so hard to photograph. They’re very timid, the slightest sound frightens them and they bury their head underneath their body. Sometimes even the sound of the camera.

Interesting – that makes it all the more special ;o
Renee Dawson 26 days ago
What a fascinating creature this is Bob!
Bob Wickham replied 26 days ago
Thankyou Renee, a lot of the small animals here, especially mainland Australia, have suffered terribly because of foxes and feral cats but this guy is covered in spines which is very effective protection
Lee-Anne Raffe... 23 days ago
Superb! I have just finished watching a programme about these! Great write up
Bob Wickham replied 23 days ago
Thankyou Lee-Anne, they’re fascinating little creatures. I hope the programme was good.

You do have some interesting animals on your continent, don’t you? LOL Love this little guy. Outstanding portrait.
Bob Wickham replied 21 days ago
Thankyou Ann, yes we do have some interesting animals here. Unfortunately the survival of a lot of the little ones is threatened because of animals brought over from other continents like cats and foxes. Echidnas are lucky to have spines so they’re a bit tougher to eat.
