schools out
One lone desk in an otherwise empty classroom.
The ghost town that is Humberstone, an abandoned nitrate mining town in the Atacama Desert, near Iquique in northern Chile.
I’ve converted it to B&W in PS CS4 and on another layer in Overlay blending mode I’ve used a texture of the patterns that the sun makes on the sandy bed of a tannin stained creek.

this is great i like the textures but i would also love to see this on its own…
Bob Wickham replied
thankyou caradione, I wasn’t sure which way to go with it. I’ll put up the straight b&w version as well
Jason Asher

Bob Wickham replied
thankyou John, I’ve had a hard time deciding between the colour, the B&W and this one.

Mel Brackstone
Very nicely done, Bob, the texture makes it stand out :)
Bob Wickham replied
thanks Mel, I like the texture too, but I like the straight b&w version as well so I’ll put that up in the next couple of days.
micmac
Simple and beautiful, the window’s light and reflection gives stillness and serenety to the scene..love it!
Bob Wickham replied
thankyou micmac. It was still and serene when I was there. I was the only one in the room and it was very calm and quiet.
Anthony Mancuso
great composition, tone and texture
Bob Wickham replied
thankyou Anthony, very much appreciated
Nadya Johnson
Great mood and somehow, a sense of loss – nostalgia – passing time – just beautiful!
Bob Wickham replied
Thankyou Nadya, the whole town has that sense of loss. A complete town that was just pushed aside when artificial fertilizer was invented, making the natural mined product obsolete
Ric Alexander
Quite a powerful image. very good ediitn, well done.
Bob Wickham replied
thankyou Ric
Karen Cook
The texture works really well, gives it an abandoned feel. Love it.
Bob Wickham replied
Thankyou. The town is so intact it feels like everybody has just moved out, which really is exactly what happened
Colin Trebble

This is very creative and highly successful IMO.

Thankyou Rachael, the texture helps it. I think textures are beneficial as long as they’re not overdone.
