I hung my feeder exactly one week ago today. I started seeing this little hummingbird first, then today, there were two, but they were fighting each other over the feeder. They nearly hit me standing there waiting for a photo opportunity. They are so quick, chasing each other in and out of the tree, here and there. One had a neck wound I noticed in one pic, hope they don’t hurt each other or worse. I guess I don’t know the nature of hummingbirds. I hope they start sharing :D
I know this is not that great, my first try photos of hummingbirds ever. I need alot of practice. I hope to get some much better one’s. They sure don’t hang around long either, maybe 10 seconds if that, then I had to stand there for another 5-10 minutes, very tiring work, but it will be worth it when I get that one great shot I know I WILL get!!!!!
I used my sport setting to capture this. Is there another setting that works better? Would appreciate any tips if you have any.

YAAAAAAY you did it Glenna! Itoldyouso:):)
Wonderful capture, I love it!
Glenna Walker replied
I had forgotten how little they are Jan. It’s been so long since I’ve seen one. I first saw them fly past the window on my front porch, I just about blew a gasket, LOL, trying to run through the house to view the feeder. I owe you many, many thank you’s, I couldn’t have done it without your expertise and help, thanks a million Jan :D
Joseph Rieg
Good effort with a great result, Glenna
Glenna Walker replied
Thank you so much Joseph :)
jansnow
You are more than welcome Glenna, it’s fun isn’t it:)
Glenna Walker replied
Yes, but back breaking, LOL, I must have stood outside for an hour, didn’t want to leave it was so much fun :)

Beautiful! So difficult to capture!
:) Tony.
Glenna Walker replied
Oh Tony, you are so right. I am determined though to get some even better shots, I don’t give up easily, thanks so much :D
Kate Adams
Its a great capture Glenna unless they are perched they will always have wing movement but it’s an awesome shot:))
Glenna Walker replied
I did get some shots of a different one perched, but of course I had the setting set for movement and it didn’t come out well. That little guy was too busy watching out for the other one, had an evil eye look on his face, LOL. They are very hard to capture, lots of patience is required, thanks Kate!
BigD
Well done Glenna
Glenna Walker replied
Thank you Big-D!
Daniel J. McCa...
Well done, Glenna, they’re not easy! Far better than my first attempt. The Sport setting works well if your not going to use a flash. It can be addicting, get used to that standing & waiting : )
Glenna Walker replied
Thanks so much Daniel :D
Ryan Houston
Nice one…I finally decided to set my camera on manual, put it on a tripod, taped up 3 of the 4 holes so the hummingbird had to eat where my camera was pointing, then studied for my licensure exam until I heard whirring wings and then I fired away… :)
Glenna Walker replied
Haha, good one Ryan, very sneaky. Those wings make the most incredible whirring sound don’t they? Rain and thunderstorms today and forecasted for the whole week, I sure hope not, so not sure when I’ll be able to give it another try, thanks Ryan!
Michelle Barlo...
Bravo Encore – Glenna – I find they are very dificult to catch also – You did fabulous
Glenna Walker replied
Thanks Michelle :D
Blair Wainman
Wow! See, I told you they’d come. I hope you enjoy them as they are so much fun to watch. And where there’s one there’s more so hopefully you can get lots of pictures of them. Way to go! I’m so happy for you! By the way, this is a great shot!
Glenna Walker replied
I’ve seen two so far Blair, one is very agressive toward the other, hope they learn to share. Thanks Blair :)
Glenda Remaklus
Fantastic shot Glenna. Hummingbirds are very difficult to capture. Like you said, they are so quick and then too they will fly away if they see someone standing around. Great job!!!!!!!
Glenna Walker replied
They seem to be very trusting of me, thanks Glenda!
Nala

mikequigley
lovely shot mq
Glenna Walker replied
Thanks MQ!
Michael Oubridge
You will need a very fast shutter speed to try and stop those wings, it is still amazing you managed to capture one at all. Very well done Glenna.
Glenna Walker replied
I got several similar shots like this one, thank you Michael!
Mayina
Lovely Glenna.
Glenna Walker replied
Thank you Gwenda!
Squealia
Lovely image
Glenna Walker replied
Thank you Squealia :)
Blair Wainman
Well, you can throw “share” out the window! They don’t have the foggiest clue what that word is. And now begins the real challenge. You just get one in your focus and then they get chased off by another! But all the same it’s entertaining…oh and by the way, they can be fussy about the amount of sugar in the water too! Lol! Have fun!
Glenna Walker replied
Haha, no sharing allowed I see. Picky about sugar huh, well we’ll just see about that LOL, picky little boogers aren’t they, too funny Blair :D
Cheri McEachin
What a great shot!!! wow
Glenna Walker replied
Thank you Cheri :D
Shelby Stalnaker

Glenna Walker replied
Thank you Shelby !!!!

Keeli
I just love these little creatures! They sure do enjoy the feeders, when mine get low I feel like I am under attach from a Kamikazi squadron! Great capture!
Glenna Walker replied
Haha, that’s funny, they are so feisty little birds, thanks Keeli!!!
Nancy Chambers
WOW, great capture Glenna! You did a fine job for your first hummingbird try. :)
Glenna Walker replied
Why thank you very much Nancy :D
funkyfacestudio
Great capture ! they are such fast little buggers.
Glenna Walker replied
Thank you…yes they are very fast I have learned.
Jenifer
Amazing capture!
Glenna Walker replied
Thank you Jenifer :D
Anne-Marie Bok...
Good shot Glenna. To get the wings frozen you can try shutter priority with a very fast shutterspeed
Glenna Walker replied
I will certainly try that Anne-Marie, thanks so much :D
Dennis Jones -...
Nice shot Glenna…
I’ve used shutter speeds of over 1/3000 sec… still haven’t stop the wings completey. I just wish I could sync my flash higher than 1/250 sec… If you can get a flash to sync at somewhere around 1/1000 sec, I think you could completly stop the wings..
Keep trying they are very addictive…
;O)
Glenna Walker replied
Thanks Dennis…now to figure out how to change the shutter speed…I need to find my manual for this one…I’ve never used it before…I put in on shutter…but can’t find on my camera where to change it…I will keep trying I can assure you :D
amarica

Glenna Walker replied
Thank you Cheri!
Roslyn Slater
Enchanting!
Glenna Walker replied
Thanks Roslyn!
Megan Dacy
Gorgeous! When I took my hummingbird shots, I set my camera to manual focus, and put it on 1/1000 for the shutter speed. After it’s focused and ready to go, you just have to wait patiently for them to fly in. I love the noise they make!
Glenna Walker
I can’t wait to try that next spring/summer, thanks for the tip Megan!
Meike
Awe .. what an incredible shot! ;)
Glenna Walker replied
Thanks Meike!
