Artist's Description

A protester is holding the canister of a teargas bomb. The first warning on the canisters is “Do not throw at people directly”. However, Turkish police did not seem to take that warning seriously as they fired them directly towards the peaceful crowds. Also, it says on the canister “En az 120 metre”, which means “At least 120 meters”. But the police were seen numerous times firing them towards people from as close as 10 meters, which caused serious injuries, and some of these people that were hit by the canisters are still in critical condition in hospitals.
Turkey is witnessing the biggest anti-government protests in years. What started as a small sit-in to protect the bulldozing of trees in the last green space known as Gezi Park in central Istanbul has turned into tens of thousands of people protesting the authoritarian government and the imposing of conservative Islamic values on the officially secular country. Those values and laws are intended to infringe people’s civil liberties and personal freedoms. Turkish government attracted international criticism over the unbalanced use of power and brutality by the police against the protesters. Moreover, Turkish media is completely silent on the issues due to their fear of the government and Turkish people follow the news only through social media and foreign press.
