Increasingly, cell phones are finding their way into the hands of children, which I find just a bit disturbing. If you’re running around because you have a part-time job (or three!), and/or extra-curricular activities, and/or school, etc. etc., then sure, you need a cell phone.
Heck, maybe you just want to pay out the nose for one because you think they are cool, or they make you cool. Cell phones are well known for being a status symbol. But I wonder if maybe we make our kids grow up a little too quickly these days. It’s hard enough for them to focus on a book when they’re so used to television shows and video games with quickly moving pictures, loud noises and flashing lights. You want to give them a cell also so they can just text their buddies all day while in class?
Parents say they do it because it helps them keep track of their children. I disagree. If you need your kid while he’s at school, call the school. They’ll page your kid right away.
I suppose they’d help you find him if he’s running around the city with friends. But you turned out ok, so your parents must have figured out some way to keep track of you without the magic of cell phones. Maybe they have a better idea than sticking a phone in your kid’s pocket.
Just a thought…
