Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning?

As an American, I have been raised in a country where this sort of thing just doesn’t happen… So when it did happen I was in shock. But to be honest, I am always in shock when I see this sort of thing happen anywhere in this world.
For me, none of it makes much sense because what are we fighting for?
When I look at you do you know what I see?
I see me and it doesn’t matter where you live.
I see you with your family and I have a family too.
And with your friends, I have friends.
When I see a mother crying over her child Its understandable to me because I have children. I am raising my kids the same as you are and hoping that they will grow up safe and free from the horror that we see in the world today, the horror that we inflict on one another.
Can you imagine what we could accomplish together if we could just see that we are all on the same side. We fight over land and oil and money and power and none of these things will matter in the end because you cannot take any of those things with you when you go.
In the end, the only thing that will matter is the person you are and the people you love and who love you.

I know there are many people in the world that believe the Americans don’t care or that we are spoiled and only care about money and power, I have read the comments all over the web and the views of Americans is very distorted because what you are seeing most of the time are politicians and they just don’t represent who the American people really are. I know, we put them in office but we have this thing about voting and how it’s our right because we know so many before us died so we would have the right, so we vote and we do our best with what we have but I can honestly say that I know people in my everyday life that I would much rather see in office than who we have on our ballots come voting time. :) We pick who we feel will do the better job at the time but that doesn’t mean that who they are…. is who we are.

On September 11, 2001, you were able to witness the American people in action, risking their lives to help one another, that’s where I come from and it’s not really about a Country it’s about People because this Country is made up of so many different Countries. On that day we all watched as they all became brothers and sisters, each of them willing to extend a hand.

911 is now a part of history but a part of that day still lives in each of us.

We will never forget……

Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?
Were you in the yard with your wife and children
Or working on some stage in L.A.?
Did you stand there in shock at the sight of that black smoke
Risin’ against that blue sky?
Did you shout out in anger, in fear for your neighbor
Or did you just sit down and cry?

Did you weep for the children who lost their dear loved ones
And pray for the ones who don’t know?
Did you rejoice for the people who walked from the rubble
And sob for the ones left below?
Did you burst out with pride for the red, white and blue
And the heroes who died just doin’ what they do?
Did you look up to heaven for some kind of answer
And look at yourself and what really matters?

I’m just a singer of simple songs
I’m not a real political man
I watch CNN but I’m not sure I can tell
You the difference in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith, hope and love are some good things He gave us
And the greatest is love

Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?
Were you teaching a class full of innocent children
Or driving down some cold interstate?
Did you feel guilty ‘cause you’re a survivor
In a crowded room did you feel alone?
Did you call up your mother and tell her you loved her?
Did you dust off that Bible at home?

Did you open your eyes, hope it never happened
Close your eyes and not go to sleep?
Did you notice the sunset the first time in ages
Or speak to some stranger on the street?
Did you lay down at night and think of tomorrow
Or go out and buy you a gun?
Did you turn off that violent old movie you’re watchin’
And turn on “I Love Lucy” reruns?

Did you go to a church and hold hands with some strangers
Did you stand in line and give your own blood?
Did you just stay home and cling tight to your family
Thank God you had somebody to love?

And the greatest is love.
And the greatest is love.

Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?

Song is by Alan Jackson.
