It was March 10th, 2008. Britany and Jason were both exhausted. Having to meet up with each other at almost 3 a.m. at their usual meeting spot at 168th Street and Broadway wore them out enough. However, they still had to ride the A train to Penn Station, then ride the Long Island Rail Road to MacArthur Airport, and then they had to fly to DFW Dallas Fort Worth Airport before they could even get their day started. The next four days for the couple was going to be completely insane and busy.
Their plane landed that morning and the couple headed outside to smoke a much needed cigarette. Britany grabbed her phone and called her mom, letting her know that she had made it and that her best friend, Naomi, wasn’t there yet. “Well, call me if she isn’t there in 30 minutes and maybe Roger can come get you,” her mom said, referring to her step-dad. “Okay, mom, love you,” Britany said in response. “Love you too, bye.” Click.
Britany flipped her swivel screen again typing n-a-o, causing Naomi to be brought up. She then pressed call and closed the screen, bringing her phone to her right ear and bringing her cigarette up to her lips as she took a deep drag. The phone rang twice before Naomi answered saying that she had gotten lost due to construction detours, but that she was almost there. Britany said that was fine, then hung up the phone. Sighing, she looked at Jason and smiled, blowing him a kiss. “She’s almost here,” she said.
Jason smiled and looked at the sky. “It’s been so long since I’ve seen a clear blue sky,” he said. Britany’s heart leaped in her chest. “You happy to be home, baby?” she asked. He took a few steps over to her and kissed her lips, tucking her hair behind her ear as he did so. “Ecstatic,” he said softly before their lips pressed together again. She stood from the cold bench, wrapping her arms around him. “You nervous about meeting my parents tomorrow?” she asked. “Yes,” he answered, honestly.
He wanted them to like him, but he knew that his age was going to get in the way of their judgement. There was thirteen years between the couple, but they didn’t care. All that they knew was that they loved each other and that they were willing to risk it all to be together. Britany slowly stood and made her way over to him as he had walked away. She then wrapped her arms around his stomach. He smiled and draped his arm over her shoulders, his right hand resting on her arm.
Their hug was brief for a mere moment later, she saw Naomi drive up in her electric blue 2005 Saturn Ion 2 Coupe with suicide doors, which was so named Katie Katalyst. Britany’s smile widened. It was her Official Best Friend Forever. She looked up at Jason and simply said, “She’s here.”
The couple made their way to the car and a high pitched squeal was heard from inside the car. Jason put their bags in the trunk and they got in their respective seats – Britany in the passenger seat and Jason in the back. “I’m home, bitch,” Britany screamed as they drove away. She, then, texted her mom to let her know that Naomi had arrived and they were on their way back to Plano.
They needed to drop their bags off and grab some food before they headed out again to visit another one of Britany’s old friends, Chrissy. When they arrived back in Plano, Naomi opened the door to her house and they all walked in. A sense of familiarity washed over Britany. She had spent many a night at this house and had missed just the feel of the environment. Naomi’s mother was the first around the corner, instantly hugging Britany and introducing herself to Jason. Then came the one person Britany had been the most excited to see, with the exception of Naomi and her parents. He turned the corner and the first words out of his mouth were “Nani!” He ran over to her and Britany instantly hugged him and kissed the top of his head. “BEN!” she exclaimed, happy to hug Naomi’s little brother.
Ben had Down Syndrome, which is when an extra chromosome 21 is put in the body, causing mental retardation, medical issues, and facial deformities. Ben was a little slow, but he was sweet and funny, and he made Britany happy. Britany intoduced him to Jason, and he said his name and smiled and laughed, going off in his own little language of talking to himself. Britany turned the corner and saw that not much had changed. “Where are Jason and I sleeping?” she asked Naomi. Naomi just smiled and said, “Y’all get my bed and I’m going to sleep on the couch, because my couch is the shit!” It was true, Naomi’s leather couch was amazingly comfortable, so Britany and Jason found out when they took a little cat nap later that afternoon.
They ate a little and got settled in just in time to head back out to go to Garland to see Chrissy. Chrissy and Britany had known each other since the fourth grade. Britany had introduced Naomi and Chrissy many years before, causing an instant friendship. When they arrived at Chrissy’s house, she made her way out to the car to greet them, instantly jumping on Britany when she had gotten out of the car. Britany grabbed Chrissy’s butt, a custom between the two, as Chrissy had a rather large one for her size. They kissed, as they had for years because they were as close as sisters.
Once again, Jason was introduced and they made their way into the house. Several hours and many long discussions and photographs later, Britany was falling asleep sitting up. They ushered her and Jason into the backseat and she instantly cuddled up against him, falling asleep on the way back to Naomi’s house.
Once they arrived, Britany changed into her pajamas and Naomi went into her bedroom to have a brief conversation with her. “So, you two aren’t gonna, like, do anything on my bed are you?” Naomi asked. Britany just laughed and shook her head, still half asleep from the ride. “Um, no, you have no risk of that happening. Hard as it is to believe, I’m still a virgin,” she said, laying down onto the bed, cozying up to Naomi’s massive leopard print pillow. “Do you approve, Naomi” she asked. It was very important for her OBFF to approve of her boyfriend and the love of her life.
Naomi had never approved of any of Britany’s older boyfriends, and they had never worked out. Maybe if Naomi approved of Jason, it would work out. “I do,” Naomi replied, smiling. “I’ve never seen you so happy, Britany. You two are perfect for each other,” she continued. Britany smiled and leaned up, hugging her best friend. “I’m going to sleep now. Can you bring Jason in? This’ll be our first time sleeping in bed together.” Naomi smiled and nodded, standing up off of the floor. She opened the door and Jason walked in shortly after Naomi walked out. He turned the lights off, taking his shirt off and his jeans.
He crawled onto the bed, the mattress being on the floor. He smiled and crawled up, his left arm draping over her as he pulled her close. He breathed her in as she sighed out in content. This was where she belonged, and she’d risk her own death to be with him.
The next morning, Naomi came into the room and woke the couple up. They hadn’t even moved, his arm still draped over her and their bodies pressed together. Britany rolled over and kissed Jason on the lips and smiled, stretching. “That was the best sleep I’ve had ever in my life,” she said, being completely honest. She hadn’t slept so sound and felt so safe while she was asleep in her entire life. Everything came together in that one instant. He smiled and nodded as the couple stood, him quickly changing into his going outside and smoking outfit.
They smoked their cigarette before showering and getting ready for the hour and a half drive out to Greenville to meet her parents. Naomi hadn’t gone to bed until almost 3 am and she was exhausted. They stopped and bought some cigarettes and some refreshments for their drive. “I made you something, Britany,” Naomi said, popping a CD into her car’s CD Player. “I made a 3 CD playlist for while you’re here,” she continued. Britany instantly smiled as she heard the beginning notes for “Buried a Lie” by Senses Fail playing. She hadn’t heard that song since they were in school together. “OH MY GOD!” she yelled, singing along with every single word, having memories wash over her from years and years ago, when life was easy.
Well, an hour and a half later, they made it to Greenville and Britany started to get antsy. She was completely nervous about her mom meeting her boyfriend. She knew that the age thing was going to be a big issue. She was going to stand up for what she knew was right, however. All that she knew was that she loved him and he loved her and that was all that mattered to her. To her, he had hung the moon, and after the night before, she knew that they were destined to be together.
When they arrived at her mom’s house, Britany grabbed her bag that she had packed to spend the night. Jason and Naomi were going to go back to Plano that evening and come back in the morning to pick her up. She needed to spend time with her family, and Jason completely understood that. She got out of the car and let Jason out of the backseat, as they slowly made their way to the top of the walkway. Her mom opened the door and smiled. They looked almost identical, many people had said the looked like they could have been twins.
She made her way inside, hugging her mom, then introducing her to Jason, who in turn shook her hand as they made their way inside. That was the easy part. The hard part was waiting all day for her step-dad to come home from work to meet Jason. That was who she was honestly more afraid of. They had a great day of just catching up, visiting, and smoking cigarettes. Naomi being the only person who didn’t smoke, Britany tried to keep it to a minimum, but when it came to being around her mom, she smoked like a freight train, going through two packs in one day.
It was almost five in the evening when her step-dad had gotten home. Britany stood up and hugged him, smiling. Jason then stood up and stuttered as he introduced himself, causing Britany to smile, looking over at him. She loved him so, and knew he was so scared. Roger was a big man, brute strength to go along with him. Her parents kept pressing the age issue, teasing the couple the whole evening through. Jason didn’t talk a lot, like he never did. When her step-dad went to bed around 8 that night, he called her in there to talk to her. “So, you really like him, Britany?” he asked. She nodded and smiled. “I love him. More than anybody that I have ever loved or even cared about. When I’m with him, everything falls into place and he makes me happy,” she replied. He smiled and nodded. “Alright, well, if he makes you happy, I approve. He just needs to talk more. I don’t feel like I know him very well,” he said. Her smile went from ear to ear as she nodded. “Alright, I’ll tell him, dad,” she said, quickly hugging him before she made her way out of the room.
Jason and Naomi were about to leave and she wanted to go outside and get one last kiss before he did leave. It was going to be difficult for Britany to sleep that night without him there to hold her. She loved how it felt and wanted it again, but knew that her parents would not allow that in any way. So, they had to part for just one night. Jason pressed his lips to hers as she draped her arms over his shoulders. She smiled and giggled at him. “I love you so much,” she whispered. He pressed his forehead to hers and smiled. “I love you too, baby,” he whispered, gruffly. “I’m never going to hurt you,” he added. Her heart fluttered in her chest and she instantly pressed her lips to his again in a fierce kiss.
Naomi made her way out of the house. It was time for them to leave and Britany sighed. “I’ll see you in the morning, baby. Text me when you get back?” she asked. He nodded and smiled. “I will, baby. I love you.” She smiled and replied with, “I love you too, handsome. See you in the morning.” They shared one more kiss before he got in Naomi’s car and they drove off. She made her way back inside the house, spending some more time with her mom before she finally got into her sister’s bed, falling asleep with more difficulty than she would have liked.
It was her last full day in Texas on her vacation and she woke up exhausted, but anxious to see Jason. She made her way into the kitchen, grabbing a much needed cup of coffee. She had told Jason to text her when he had gotten home, but she didn’t have her phone charger, so her phone had died that night. Her mom was almost done getting ready for work and was on her way out the door when she woke up. Britany gave her one last hug and told her she would call her when she got back to New York. She was going to miss this place. Her mother’s house resonated a type of ‘homey’ feel to her.
Britany sat outside for a while, smoking a few cigarettes before she finished getting ready. She called Naomi and she said that they were almost there. Britany quickly finished getting ready for this day as she made her way out front, watching Naomi’s car pull up with Jason instantly hopping out of it. He walked quickly over to her and pulled her to him, kissing her lips quickly. She smiled and hugged him. “Good morning, baby,” she whispered. He grabbed her overnight bag and put it in Naomi’s trunk and they made their way back to Plano, spending the day going to Britany’s old stomping grounds, including her old high school, where Naomi stayed in her car the whole time. She hated that place, and she had every right to, having been ridiculed when she went to school there.
It was Britany and Jason’s last night in Texas and Naomi wanted to have a huge get together with all of Britany’s friends and some of Naomi’s new friends as well. The dinner went by relatively quickly with everybody catching up and everybody eating and going off do ing their own things. Jason and Britany ate their food and spent all of the time together that they could because the next day was going to be very hard on them. When Britany was scheduling their flights, she didn’t schedule his flight back to be the same as hers. He left three hours later than she did and it was going to be awful.
That next morning came and they made sure that they had everything that they had brought with them packed back into their suitcases. It was time to go back to New York and face reality again. “Just a few more months,” she kept telling herself. “Just a few more months.” The flight was filled with sleep and thinking of Jason, especially during the many stops that she had to make. You get what you pay for when you buy cheap airplane tickets.
When Britany got back to New York, she had to wait thirty minutes for the Long Island Rail Road train to come to her stop. She was exhausted, having barely slept in the past four days. An hour and a half later, she was back at her apartment at 183rd Street and Fort Washington Ave. Home sweet home. She made her entrance into the apartment and placed her bags down, making her way into her bedroom, faking a smile as she saw Rachael laying on the bed, as if waiting for her. “How was your trip?” she asked, her eyes looking over Britany to see if there was anything she could nitpick on. Britany continued her fake smile and said, “GREAT! Glad to be home, though, I’m so exhausted. Naomi kept me running the entire time,” she laughed. The two went to sleep and Jason made it home later that night, the two seeing each other again in the morning.
June 2nd, 2008. The clear blue sky was above the couple as they stood on their balcony smoking their respective cigarettes in their new apartment in Greenville, TX. They had just finished moving the furniture and everything else that had been donated to them into the apartment. Her parents left so that the couple could be alone. Naomi was coming over to spend the next few days with the couple. Jason’s birthday was on the 4th. Britany’s eyes closed as she inhaled the Texas air. It had been a long morning for the lovebirds, but they had made it through. She turned and looked at her boyfriend, the smile not leaving her face. “I’m so happy,” she whispered as she kissed his lips.
When their lips parted, the only thing that he could think of to say was, “Welcome home, baby.” They were home, now. The couple had risked it all to be together, and they did it. They could be together in peace now, and that’s all that they had ever wanted.
That was a year and a half ago. It’s September 29th, 2009. It’s 2:53 in the morning and as I look at the clock, I feel accomplished that I finished this. This was my life. I risked my life to be with Jason, and the fact is, we’ve been together for almost two years now. Not a lot of people do, in fact believe this story, but I will tell you this: it’s real. All of it. Our love being the most real of all things. Our love is the one thing that will be there for us at the end of the day and as long as Jason and I are together, we’ll be able to make it. To those of you who have read this and have enjoyed it, thank you. And to you, Jason, welcome home, baby.
It starts off kinda slow, I’m sorry, but just keep going. My details are a little shady, it’s been over a year now, I can’t remember too much from back then. This is the last of the ‘The Love of Two Lost Souls’ series. Thought I’d go out with a bang. :D
