Sadness
I am a great believer in Zoo’s as my Philidelphia Zoo helps animals and is super clear on what is best for the animals and it shows on their wonderful faces.
However, there is a small Zoo near me in NJ, and I try to avoid going there as they all look so sad. I think this is the first photo that I have made that clearer depicts sadness on his face. He sat infront on me to get some photos then when I put my camera away, he left. I told him thank you, and if I could I would make his home so much bigger than it is.
This sad boy that makes my heart sink is a Japanese Macaque.

The expressions in their eyes are so poignantly close to our own, when they feel strong emotions. It makes one wonder how anyone could ever claim that animals have no souls or feelings. Your captures are beautiful, and this one is no exception.

I know I hate it when they are in such a small enclosure and even in a zoo and not free but these days I think they may be safer in a zoo than in the wild since we have been encroching on there habitat or homes slowely for years leaving them less and less space to live and be free and have food to eat. But I feel for them in both cases and hope that we can find a solution sometime soon!!!! Anway great capture of this beautiful guy!! =)

Cheri, your photos always amaze – this one brought tears to my eyes today. So poignant a gaze. And the grey mark on the macaque’s face looks like a permanent tear track. If I may ask, what lens do you shoot with for these close studies?
Cheri McEachin replied
I photographed this one with my best friend the 100-400mm lens. However he was so close to me I really didnt need it, but that lens gets through the cage he was in with no problem. My heart always sinks when I look at this one to..thanks for asking

So touching and painful to view. I totally agree. We have a good zoo in Knoxville as well that is all about preservation and protection but I remember what the same zoo was like when I was a child and it was very sad. I think it is especially sad though that places like this still exist. I have a friend on another photo site that posted a similar image and it, like this, was heartbreaking.

I can barely look at him, yet he has such beauty and dignity in his eyes. So powerful.

Such a moving image!
“A great photograph is a full expression of what one feels about what is being photographed in the deepest sense, and is, thereby, a true expression of what one feels about life in its entirety.” ~Ansel Adams
