Dear Manolya F: When I was a child of about 10 yrs old my family could not afford to send me summer camp with the rest of the neighborhood kids. My mother gave me an old army blanket and told me to go out into the backyard and use my imagination.

Just before dusk I set about making a tent out of the blanket with broken branches and clothes pins. I used an old cardboard box for a pallet. Well, with the light coming from the backdoor of our house and under my mother’s frequently watchful eye, the night descended. Every now and then I would look out the tent to see if my mom was still watching, of course, she was.

I must have dozed off or something because the next time I looked out of the tent. The stairway in your image above, was there. Exactly the same. With the wonder of a child, I approached this spectacle. As I came closer a very soothing voice said “Roy, come up the stairs”. I looked to the backdoor of our house where the light still shown from the window. My mom wasn’t there. She was busy in the kitchen but I could hear her humming.

I looked back to the stairway that led upward and again the voice said “Roy, come up the stairs. Everything will be alright”.

I started up the stairs as I would normally go up any ordinary stairs, walking upright. The higher I went I began to bend and use my hands as though I were climbing a ladder. I looked behind me and down and saw that our house with the light streaming from the window in the backdoor was so far below me and partially obscured by trees that it quite suddenly took my breath away.

The voice came again and said “Don’t be frightened, come ahead if you want to, nothing will harm you”.

I climbed a few more tentative steps and somehow found myself much higher up than I was before so that I could no longer see our house, only clouds and tiny specks of flickering lights.

Panic gripped me as I clung, paralyzed to the solidness of the stairs. All I could do was tremble and close my eyes and cry and think of my mom and dad and my sisters and brothers back in the home that I loved so much. And, how I wanted to be with them then.

I heard the voice say one word, “Alright”, and instantly I was standing at the few steps that led up to the backdoor or our house looking up at the light that shown from the window. My heart was still racing and I was breathing erratically. I looked around the backyard and saw only my makeshift tent under and apple tree, the old 3 car garage and heard only the silence of the night. I looked up to a clear cloudless sky.

Up the steps I ran and shot through the door into my mom’s embrace. I sqeezed her so tightly and looked up into her beautiful face and loving eyes. She could see that something had frightened me. She asked me what the matter was. I babbled some unintelligible, breathless nonsense that brought a tighter embrace and her reassuring smile. She rocked me and calmed me in her arms. All the while listening to my tirade. The last thing I remember is her carrying me up the stairs and putting me into my bed.

That was 47 years ago. I’ve only ever told what happened that night to one soul other than my mom, my beloved mate of 25 years. Now, I share it with you because of the wonderful image that you have created of my (dream?)!!

Fantastic! When my aunt died I found a poem (can’t remember who it was by) but it went something like
