The Marlboro Man

Taken in my brothers well lit carport.

I had the flash (580EXII) shooting through an umbrella.
It was just to the right of the frame, less than 2 feet from Andrew (Marlboro Man).
I had another 580EX in the background, out of sight to the left, it was lighting the Harley Davidson.
They were both fired by a Canon STE2 remote infa-red trigger.
To remove all the ambiant light, I had the 5DMKII on f18, ISO 100 and 1/200.

This was just a test shot, he lit a smoke up whilst I as setting everything up, I think it adds to it.
I don’t endorse smoking, but for this shot, it was ok.

Just trying something a little different, I’m very happy with my first results… I look forward to doing similar types of portraits over the winter months.
If anyone would like to be a subject for me to photograph… I’d love to hear from you :-)

Some serious work on those arms there. Some more light on the bike would have been good to see IMO. Perhaps next time you could try the 2nd flash behind the bike for some rim, and separation lighting on the two subjects. You’ll get the hang of it eventually.

  • I agree Pete… it was just a test shot, the flashes were not in the correct positions. I later took better photos in RAW, but until upload the new version of Adobe RAW, I can’t process them! :-)
My brother and his family love the shots.

I love this lighting! Incredible character you’ve captured here (in more ways than one, I suppose!)! I love your thorough description of how you captured it, as well.

Hey, fly me to where you are and I’d happily be your photo subject! : )

  • Hello Ann… I’ll send you a plane ticket :-)

What a brilliant character portrait Peter, love the tones and the fact that the colour stands out in his inks… beautiful work!! The expression and lighting is just fabulous too!!

  • Thanks Simone. It come out ok, my brother was playing the part beautifully! :-) The collection of tatts has been happening over the last 20 years, I had to show then off.
