H-K235

Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me,
but weep for yourselves, and for your children.
For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say,
Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that bare not,
and the breasts that gave not suck.
Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us;
and to the hills, Cover us.
For if they do these things in the green tree,
what shall be done in the dry?

(The Gospel of Marcion)

Again we are walking the same – or a parallel – journey my friend. This scripture from the gnostic Gospel – virtually identical to its sister verse in canonical Luke – in fact, much of what has been excluded from canonical scripture has been much on my mind of late. What an extraordinary and profound interpretation of this passage in an image that is so powerfully disturbing and at the same time compelling – forcing us to look deeper into both ourselves and the world we have created and leave as legacy for our children. If we can behave as we do toward the earth and toward each other when times are relatively good, how then shall we act when things are bad, when scarcity is the norm, when we have destroyed love and beauty? Dry wood is tinder is it not? Stunning Judith – absolutely stunning – your images are holy fire.

  • hsien-ku replied

your knowledge of theology is incredible lianne! there is something so satisfying to me about finding gnostic passages that mirror the orthodox canon – i will not forgive the church for omitting so much from the bible (so much practical knowledge lost or discredited for the sake of empire-building!) dry wood is tinder indeed – that though gives me pause. thankyou so much for your lovely words!

I know it’s contemplative but like so many images of the Christian faith it just looks so forlorn and forsaken … that said, your subject looks about to smile and perhaps she has turned her back on the dark of sacrifice and that said I love the picture

ps I think the text may read ”...wombs that bear not…” not sure if the scholars were railing against mid-riffs and belly button jewellery

  • hsien-ku replied

thanks geoffrey – yes, the gnostics either couldn’t spell or were fiercely opposed to nudity :) the translation i have gives the spelling as written but i think the meaning is as you say ‘bear’. sorry about the forsaken forlornness but it’s obligatory with christian images, no?

  • Andrew Makowiecki

    Andrew Makowi...

Love this one Judith though the forecast is very bleak. I hope this prophecy is not to do with our time.

  • hsien-ku replied

thanks so much andrew – these were the words said by christ as he carried his cross to golgotha. whether they apply to our time or an earlier one is a matter for speculation. but, for me, the message is clear – humanity becomes more and more brutal. not because of its circumstances but because of its nature. and i tend to agree . . .

You manage, yet again, to pair beliefs with dual purpose and meaning, and come out with something supremely thought provoking. Chilling.

  • hsien-ku replied

thankyou so much maureen – i wonder sometimes if christ really knew how true his prophesy would be. humanity becomes more and more brutal, more and more numb, even during my lifetime i have seen it. pacifism, once celebrated, is now seen as a sign of naivety . . . and we are still in the green tree, what will become of us in the dry?

“we forget that it was religion that killed christ, and religion still does.”
Exactly, I have never had issues with Christ, but organized religion has done nothing to help the world understand that Man.

  • hsien-ku replied

indeed, if christ were to return he would have nothing to do with their church! and the gnostic gospels make that rather clear (hence the omission of so many texts from the canon!) – shame on them!
