Living is no laughing matter:
you must live with great seriousness
like a squirrel, for example—
I mean without looking for something beyond and above living,
I mean living must be your whole occupation.
Living is no laughing matter

Looks like the Squirrel knows more then you think? Absolutely fantastic and brilliant pose of the Squirrel :-))
hsien-ku replied
thankyou sylvia, i believe you are right. because this was no ordinary squirrel. what normal forest animal would gaze into the afternoon sun with such a contemplative demeanor? he was clearly a very special, seer and oracle squirrel :)
Eyal Nahmias
Poetic and philosophical squirrel. Humans have a lot to learn from. Love the creativity and power in this artwork. The ability to “personalize” animals and deliver a strong message visually is a gift not to many artists posses. A fave for me.
hsien-ku replied
thankyou very much eyal – yes he was a poet-squirrel, a philosopher-squirrel even :)
or perhaps all animals have his depth of understanding and we poor blind humans only recognise it infrequently – and then, in our arrogance, we compare this understanding to human arts . . . if i had half the practical life-knowledge of this little squirrel i would be a guru indeed.
Marvin Hayes
Really awe inspiring ,very impressive , makes him look like he’s reflecting on life and making a life changing decision on what direction the rest of his life is going to take . Should I take over the world ? Or just become a Monk ;
) Get it …. Chip Monk … never mind my bad :|hsien-ku replied
:) thankyou marvin – you made me laugh (chipmonk!)
but maybe this squirrel’s secret is to not consider the future at all but only to exist, for that moment, resplendent in the afternoon sunshine.

Beautiful – it illustrates the poem so well, which makes me wonder – what came first? The squirrel or the poem …
hsien-ku replied
thankyou jan! I think, given the squirrel’s superior intelligence to mine, he would be the best person to ask.

Mike Weeks
Great piece of work. Of course you may be missing the fact that just maybe this Squirrel may just be as shallow and vain. With eyes positioned to give him a near 360 deg view of the world perhaps he has just stopped to pose for the camera – you see he doesn’t have to face you to see you. Forever the cynic.
hsien-ku replied
yes, it’s the great pitfall of sages – knowing that vanity is the enemy they nevertheless fall prey to it the moment they start thinking of themselves as wise.
Antanas
lovely job
