H-K109: the artist fakes her own death to escape further embarrassment

To die: to sleep;
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache, and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to, ‘tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish’d. To die, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: aye, there’s the rub;
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come,
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause

(Shakespeare)

    Beautiful image…. This must be a wonderful cemetery to wander around :))

  • hsien-ku replied

    thankyou rosemary – it’s a really beautiful and interesting cemetery. the story behind the title is somewhat less beautiful and interesting :)

    J – you have captured this subject utterly beautifully… so – why am I ‘worried’? The light and shade provide the most subtly beautiful composition. If you have any idea why I may be feeling so ‘worried’ – you know I am just a b-mail away…
    K xx

  • hsien-ku replied

    oh k! you are the sweetest thing in the whole world!
    no need to worry though. just had a disappointing weekend and ended up feeling foolish. i can be pretty naive sometimes – always expecting a fairytale ending.
    and anyway your kind-heartedness always restores my faith in humanity. thankyou so much for caring. it really does mean a lot to me. x

    Very good work. Is this a true shot or a creation? It is great either way. Sorry you had a disappointing weekend but thank you for sharing the dark side of your mood.

  • hsien-ku replied

    thanks carmen – this one is a true shot. the statue is in an old cemetery in berlin and the little bird is something they call a ‘spatz’ (don’t know how to spell it!) I fiddled with the levels and tones in photoshop (naturally) and straightened and cropped but nothing too drastic :)

  • ImagesFX

    ImagesFX

    so what is the true story behind the wonderful title?

  • hsien-ku replied

    :) truth is a difficult word to define now isn’t it?
    heidegger thought it was ‘that which discloses the real in the image’.
    and i like heidegger’s definition because it suggests that the truth is already present in the image somehow – and that perhaps it is not necessary to relate events so embarrassing that one is tempted to fake one’s own death in order to escape them…

  • khosie

    khosie

    At the round earth’s imagined corners, blow
    Your trumpets,angels, and arise,arise
    From death.. John Donne.

    faking one’s death even in embarrassment can be only taken seriously if it becomes an art form in itself and this is a glorious work of art

  • hsien-ku replied

    thankyou my friend.
    you know – here i am, a grown woman; even an educated woman, but after a recent social blunder I suddenly thought ‘nothing for it, you’ll have to fake your own death’. It was the kind of thought I’d have had when I was 16 years old – too rare an experience for me to just laugh it off and let it go. So I decided to immortalise it somehow. Imperfect I know, but probably a better choice than actually faking my own death :)

  • Dragan Petrovic

    Dragan Petrovic

  • hsien-ku replied

    thankyou dragan! posting this image has helped me to find the lighter side of an otherwise uncomfortable memory.

  • clickinhistory

    you didn’t ask for the port to be passed from the right did you? Or worse for a lady, appeared at the function in the same outfit as your hostess? ;) Sometimes social blunders remind us of the stupidity of the social rites we surround ourselves and free us from them

  • hsien-ku replied

    yes, it’s amazing how seriously we take ourselves – it was eye-opening for me to see what a grand and silly picture i had formed of myself. and it shocked me when that picture faltered. maybe the worst vanities are the ones we don’t realise we have – because we believe them. i’ll be wiser next time :)

    It’s, uh, so Shakespearean – any way you slice it!

  • hsien-ku replied

    :) i thought the same thing. if you’ve going to fake your own death you might as well do it like juliet!

  • armadillozenith

    armadillozenith

    An extraordinary moment captured, as this image. It is especially so since there is a bird, carved, amid rays on the upper stonework..
    The little (live) bird, posed there, and you present to take its picture, seems a thing somehow destined..

  • hsien-ku replied

    thankyou armadillozenith! I’d not thought about the connection between the stone and real birds! but you’re right
