H-K086 - sometimes I dream of tidal waves
I am going to write a poem about war. Perhaps it will not be a real poem, but it will be about a real war.
It will not be a real poem, because if the real poet were here and if the news spread through the crowd that he was going to speak—then a great silence would fall; at the first glimpse, a heavy silence would swell up, a silence big with a thousand thunderbolts.
The poet would be visible; we would see him; seeing him, he would see us; and we would fade away into our own poor shadows, we would resent his being so real, we sickly ones, we troubled ones, we uneasy ones.
He would be here, full to bursting with the thousand thunderbolts of the multitude of enemies he contains—for he contains them, and satisfies them when he wishes—incandescent with pain and holy anger, yet as still as a man lighting a fuse, in the great silence he would open a little tap, the very small tap of the mill of words, and let flow a poem, such a poem that it would turn you green.
What I am going to make won’t be a real, poetic, poet’s poem for if the word “war” were used in a real poem—then war, the real war that the real poet speaks about, war without mercy, war without truce would break out for good in our inmost hearts.
For in a real poem words bear their own facts.
(René Daumal)

The heart of my craft beckons me to see the truth
Yet the truth is hidden from the sight of many
In them we trust our way of life for they give us comfort!
So many lives sacrificed for the need of war
So many broken hearts sowed together by the thread of lies
So many dreams taken for the emptiness of Greed
The heart of my craft beckons me to see the truth
Yet the truth is but an act of deception
A play of happiness upon the tears of misery
You took from many the will to live
And then filled their hearts with hate
You created the perfect illusion
WE KILLED FOR YOU
These eyes devoured death for you
As we cast the sacrament of blood upon our enemy
The heart of my craft beckons me to see the truth
You killed your own and made us lose our goal
My hands now run red with the blood of innocence
“How can my heart see the truth when you have ripped from me the truth of sight!”
Your image and words are truly powerful my friend! Excellent in all-aspects! Bravo!!!...)o(

I, too – sometimes…
hsien-ku replied
truly? isn’t it bizarre?
Sometimes I dream that I am caught in the nexus between several tidal waves then, somehow, I am thrown up onto the very top of the curl of one of them – i wake when i begin to fall. and the waves are never like real tsunami – they are tall, like buildings, like some that you see in japanese paintings, and they glide on the surface of the ocean like snails (racing snails!)
would be interested to know about your tidal wave dreams

One of the few things in life that we just can’t control….... what a powerful image!
And such magnificent writing….. well done J :))
hsien-ku replied
thank you Rosemary! the writing isn’t mine – it is from one of my favourite poets René Daumal. Sometimes I wonder if dreams about the ocean have something to do with realising just how little is in one’s control . . . how are things in Oz? have you gotten to Toowoomba yet?

I noticed you used another Daumal poem on one of my favourites by you – H-K083…. I love the image but the poem scared me! LOL! This one touched me in a less volatile way…. not sure if you know what I mean….:))
No, not in Toowoomba yet… not till the end of the year….. can’t wait :D
hsien-ku replied
yes, Daumal is a mixed bag – some of his poems are beautiful and others scare me senseless, they’re often too existential for polite company! :) hope your move goes smoothly!

My tidal wave dreams? Well, they don’t happen all that frequently, but usually a wave is about to crash on me and I close my eyes and it disappears. Or it hits me but I myself am unmoved, the waves move around me. Once, I was in a house and waves battered the little glass window but didn’t break through. In the end, they never course any damage, even if I think they will at first.
hsien-ku replied
wow – amazing dreams. you must be a very strong person!

Very capturing image, and well chosen words to go with it. I have a similar thing with cyclones … I agree – I think it’s about control, or lack of it.
hsien-ku replied
thanks Barbara – I’ve never had a dream about cyclones. that must be terrifying!

really lovely and what a lovely poem. here’s one I wrote about war
In the future before we go to war
You’ll have to go and knock the door
of the fathers that you just might kill
and tell his children why you’d bring such ill
Before you go and take his life
you’ll have to meet his loving wife
even hold her by the hand
in the hope that she will understand
Before you get to hold a gun
you get to meet his Dad and Mum
Look them in the eyes and say
“I’ve got to do it anyway”
Then they can come and do the same
Meet our families, name by name
and hope they too will understand
they must protect their mother land
And when it comes the time to fight
I think we’d lay awake at night
or dream about his kith and kin
I THINK THE WAR WOULD NOT BEGIN
