The listless sun deceived our farewell,
boats were leaving like flies,
birds puckered up like toothless mouths
and fell stiff and dead from the heavens.

When I was alone under the yellow sky
where my eyes were ripping up rags,
I turned out my pockets
in the hope of finding an exile companion.

There was nothing in them
nothing but dust from the roads,
nothing but roads of misery,
nothing but dead queens nailed to wooden beams.

thanks Druidstorm. Daumal is my favourite poet. He was a friend of Huxley and devotee of Gurdjieff. Died at 36 as a result of years of drug experimentation – but he knew more by then than most people could uncover if they had 100 years in which to search. I use his words because I have none of my own. x

first off, this is a gorgeous image and that is why i viewed it! once i was here, i read your daumal quote on there which sent me searching for more by him. now i am going to order the biography and his books as i am finding his life and works to be profoundly what i feel i need in my life right now. i just wanted to thank you for that.

you are very welcome Scott and I am delighted that I’ve helped to spark an interest in Daumal. He was, as you may know, a devotee of the Armenian-Greek mystic George Gurdjieff and much of his writing shows a clear influence. I particularly love his novel “A night of serious drinking” and his unfinished “Mount Analogue”.
