Clouds and Steel

I used to ride by these a few times a week on my bike. This metal factory is, amazingly, still running in the decayed heart of Bridgeport, Connecticut, a city that’s been nearly abandoned by industry for the past 30 years, but was once a shining jewel of industrialization, if there is such a thing.

The particular type of urban decay I grew up around in Bridgeport has a familiarity to it that I’m comfortable with, as odd as that sounds. Part of it is the appeal of the wilderness; but it’s combined with my penchant for cluttered spaces full of useless, broken stuff.

Part of my objective in taking this photograph was to capture the magnificent cloud cover we had that day—not an easy feat. If I recall correctly, it took tedious hours of work in the darkroom, burning and dodging, to get both the correct contrast on the girders, and sufficient density on the clouds to make it worthwhile to include them.
