conversations in a room

oil on canvas
100×120cm
2008

this is a commissioned painting, just about finished. i was asked for something red with a cat in it.
it’s a bit dodgy looking because i took the photo on a dinky digital point-and-shoot under crap light conditions and used photoshop to clean it up. the burning and dodging is a bit retarded.

the title came from a conversation with a friend who has schizophrenia. we were talking about hearing voices, how they mutter away in the background while you’re going about your life, as though you were hearing a conversation in a room that went wherever you did. i thought that suited this image nicely.

what does ‘retarded’ mean in your language ??? :-) this is gorgeous, love the texture on the cat… I want to sleep on that couch…

i just finished the cat this evening, spent about four hours on her.

Well it shows your painting skills far outweigh your photographic skills, which is no bad thing, as everybody appears to be a photographer now, whereas I only know about one person who can paint as remarkably as this, and that’s, er, you.

  • Hop Dacworks here replied

i’ve finally figured out that you don’t need to put everything into a painting. you can pick a few things and make them work it. thanks for the kind words, ed, from a throbbing creative node such as yourself, that’s a great compliment.

Is ‘throbbing creative node’ a compliment? I think I found a video once under my brother’s bed called that.

  • Hop Dacworks here replied

fuck yeah, we all aspire to be throbbing creative nodes, don’t we?

  • Hop Dacworks here replied

I like the “graininess” of this in juxtaposition to all of the angles and the linearness of the painting (I hope all of those are real words!). And you can’t go wrong with a cat….................

did you swallow a dictionary or thesaurus? None of those words match anyway so I suggest you choose a new word to describe your beautiful painting…
