To Philippe

Autumn gives way
To Winter now
The grey clouds carry
An added weight of chill
And I must guard myself
Against these things of nature . . . Now

In our Spring
And during our Summer
You stood there
… Just there
by the stove …
Using your hands
To mix
The science of your mind
The art in your eye
The fragrant soul
known to your nose
In the hope of recreating
A beauty hung upon the walls
Of your immense life
Through the agency of my tongue

You taught I listened
You cooked I tasted

The imprint of your hand
Is upon my face
It will forever be a grace there

Yet will I again be fed
Of the gracious things you made?
I feel as though a flower
Has bloomed, and the bees
Have taken its nectar
Allowing this flower
To fruit

Before you I had tasted this fruit
And now, after you, I shall again
Eat this fruit
Yet you somehow added a taste
Which I cannot speak
And will now only be a memory
Upon my lips

Your hands added the elemental powers
That caressed me
Though I shall never again
Be the receiver from your now still hands

None of what you have done
Is lost

It is here
Upon me
And I shall sing it
With what little tune I have
To any ear that may be
Granted me

There follows your goofy grin
Saying “Let those who sing sing”
Though I cannot bend to the shape
Of your perfection
I will sing

None of what your hands have done
Is lost
It is here
Upon my face
Look at me

Those lines are my favourite. Amazing.
