My father had an uncle whose hobby was photography and when Dad was 14, his uncle began to teach him how to develop photos in the bathroom that served as their makeshift darkroom.

By the time I was born, he had really become quite a good photographer and my childhood and teen years are filled with memories of seeing Dad with his camera or the smells of the chemicals in the darkroom he built in our basement.

During the 1950’s he used this Rolleiflex. He had other cameras later and copious amounts of equipment but it’s always this camera I think of when I remember my father’s love of photography…..probably because he was busy sticking it in my face from the moment I was born! :-)

On the leather case you can see the silver oval. At that point in his life, Dad was a photo engraver so he had the tools to engrave his initials on that oval.

The light meter in the foreground is one he used for years. When he wasn’t sticking that in my face or my brother’s it was always fastened to his belt.

Oh….the girl in the picture is me. That was when I was three and I was holding the leather camera case and ‘taking pictures’ just like my Dad….who is, of course, the fellow on the left.

Oh I get to see it tonight! yay! Oh it is gorgeous! And what a beautiful tribute to your Dad. I did a similar shot with a pic of my mom a couple of years ago. This is such a great composition! And look at that camera!! Are you using it?? You should be using it! A friend of mine has the same one. I’m glad I got to see it before I went off to bed!

  • Thanks Jan!! :-)
No, I haven’t used the camera and haven’t a clue how to. I did do a bit of a google search a while ago for a camera manual and they’re still available so one of these days I’ll try it. I have this sitting on the shelf in my computer room and my, oh my….it does bring back memories of my father all the time.

Lovely image, I just borrowed my mum and dads old cameras, took some photos, but have not worked on them yet. Nice job here!

Great way to document such a lovely story – good thing was the picture of you (so sweet) at least your looking in the right end of the camera which no doubt has helped with your work since :) I love the collage you have created here very professional looking in my opinion.

  • Thanks HH!! Ah the picture of me….it reminds me so much of Adora now that she’s that age. Yes, there’s nothing like looking through the right end of the camera case for practice! :-D :-D

What a lovely tribute to your dad! A beautifully created story depicting collage that takes the viewer back in time. A lovely story you shared to go with this! WONDERFULL! : )

  • Thank you so much Sandy! Dad died a long time ago but I think of him and his photography so often….and especially now that I’ve taken up the hobby myself.

How absolutely lovely Holly! A wonderful collage full of happy memories. I wonder what he would have made of today’s digital age? ;)

  • Thanks Pat! I’ve often wondered too about Dad in the digital age. Knowing him, he would have embraced it as soon as it started. His equipment purchases and time spent on photography used to drive my mother a bit crazy at times …..the computer and digital cameras would have only made things worse! LoL

Beautiful image and a wonderful tribute to your father and your history!

  • Thank you so much Barb! Dad was one of those ‘larger than life’ type of individuals so I’m glad you think it’s a good tribute. :-)

Great tribute word wise and photo wise. I have several oldies and they are the best way to learn how to use a camera. Learns you to think twice before pressing the exposure button. I am so used to digital that setting up one of these oldies takes ages. Not for fast movement shots but love the mechanical sound of it.
A manual can be found here
Might not be the exact same model but the principle is the same. Have fun exploring the camera.

  • Wow Jo!! Thanks for that link!!! That’s fantastic. It got me looking up where I can buy film for this camera….I just may give it a try. I really appreciate you taking the time to find that!!!! :-)
