Star Of Bethlehem
I saw this stem in the florist shop the other day and was completely fascinated by it’s form and especially by its wonderful name. I’ve looked at it for a couple of days wondering how I wanted to portray it. Would it suit the contrast of a dark background…or dof greenery? Somehow either of those weren’t what I wanted though because the idea of a star of a holy city seemed like it should have softer light.
I mention this because of things written by Carolyn Staut and Jan Miller. Carolyn’s recent flower came with a story. Jan has written of thinking about what we photograph in terms of truly seeing. I believe it’s all-important to know what your goal is with an image and that it conveys something. Whether or not I’ve achieved the idea of a kind of Divine radiance is open to question but the point is the intent and the attempt.

Holly, you do such complete justice to the name. You portray the delicate as well as the sturdiness and strength. This is truly perfection. Your dof is so spot on and the use of lightness in the background graces it to perfection. My oh my, you are amazing!

i really think this is a great picture. i would have used a somewhat darker background because the flowers kind of blend in, kind of washing them out. you do have great clarity and composition, and that is a beautiful bloom indeed! let us know if you decide to change it.

I do think the b/g is fine. It’s good to find a complementary b/b sometimes. I think it works for the good, of the whole comp. A soft, real look. I need to work on that my self. Lovely lighting and work.. :)
