Tulips Together

Featured In:
-Layered With Texture

I bought these tulips with the intention of doing a still life but once I set everything up I was fascinated by the variations in the petals. So instead of the set up I had planned I pulled out a different lens (macro) and decided to just photograph the flowers themselves. There’s something so cheery about tulips in the house while there’s snow outside….they’re a wonderful reminder that spring will be here soon.

I love this one Holly! It looks like a watercolour! I love the orange!

  • Holly Cawfield replied

Thanks so much Jan!! I’m really glad you think it has that look. When I saw those tulips with their variations I thought there was a possibility they would photograph like a watercolour or oil. Took a few tries though…..doesn’t it always? LoL …..(from the far north with the luxury of Katie’s laptop. :-)

Tulips are one of my favourite flowers and I never get tired of seeing them! They always remind me that spring is just around the corner and when they bloom in the garden I can’t help but rejoice. Amazing treatment! Just love that punch of orange!

  • Holly Cawfield replied

I’ve always love tulips too Joanne….in fact there aren’t too many flowers that aren’t my favourite. LoL I’m so glad you like the way I processed this…..there were so many choices along the way I have a file chock full of different versions. :-D

This is just gorgeous! I sit here with snow falling outside, but know that spring is just around the corner. Thank you for sharing this inspiring shot. Lovely colours!

  • Holly Cawfield replied

Such a lovely comment Marjorie….it was snowing when I shot this and when I looked out the window at all that snow it was just a delight to be photographing tulips and thinking of how grand it is to be out in those spectacular gardens in spring where the tulips are massed with their wonderful colours. Thank you so much! :-)

  • Carolyn Staut

    Carolyn Staut

Wow Holly! This looks like an Old Master’s painting of Tulips. The textures of the petals and subtle tone shifts are all beautifully presented. And the way you captured the blooms leaning, leaning, towards that warm sun, reminds us of the exquisite personality of these gorgeous flowers. Another elegant piece of artistry Holly.

  • Holly Cawfield replied

A great big grin from me Carolyn. (the girls are asleep here and I’m tucked cosily on the couch with Katie’s laptop….gotta love technology!) These tulips and i had a few discussions in the process of photographing them…..I had to do a little loving coaxing to convince them they’d look nicer if they did a graceful yoga pose. Thanks Carolyn….your comments are always such a delight to receive. :-)

  • Janis Zroback

I posted so many tulip paintings to RB last spring, that I thought I would never paint them again, but last night I began to think of different ways to do them, and now seeing this incredibly lovely capture, I am definitely inspired…I just love the way you have lit them to show their delicate petals….beautiful work as always Holly…

  • Holly Cawfield replied

Tulips like roses just keep coming back and reminding us how beautiful they are. I totally understand though Janis….I feel that way about roses at the moment. :-D; Thank you so much for this lovely comment! Now I’m going to be looking forward to seeing new tulip work from you in May or June!

Could tulips be portrayed any better than this! I read all the comments on this wonderful work, and cannot offer any additional insights. You have an artist’s eye, Holly. You see things differently from most, and capture scenes and images in a way that portrays beauty and meaning in our lives.

  • Holly Cawfield replied

Oh David….thank you so much. At the moment I’m without motivation even though I have a whole new box filled with my daughter’s pottery….I just can’t ‘see’ the next image in my mind’s eye. Your comment is such an encouragement and gives me some hope that I’ll see it soon. Thank you my friend! :-)

I keep coming back to look at these still lifes Holly. They are all perfectly composed and lit and absolutely beautiful. Do you use backdrops, or are those texture layers?

    kev

  • Holly Cawfield replied

Gee Kev…thank you so much! I’m really glad you like them. I mostly use my softbox which came with five different, plain backgrounds. My favourite is the neutral grey….it seems to take the textures the best. So yes, I add a varying number of textures depending on the look I want ..ususally an average of about 5 I think and I tend to use the same ones over and over again with different opacities. The textures that I’ve found work the best have started as photographs of stone or rust or concrete…nothing with too deep a texture like most barks. Then I start working with the texture to either change colours or light…or add some filters to them…mostly a lot of trial and error with the textures but the ones I’ve found to work the best with the kind of look I want have a lot of gold or green in them and also a lot of added light.
