The roses that were my Valentine’s gift have dried and the pottery vase from my daughter has just been waiting for the right ‘something’ to fill it. My plan with these photographs of my daughter’s pottery is to photograph as many of her pieces as possible before they’ve all been given away so she’ll have a record of her work.
I’ve mentioned before that I find roses difficult to photograph. Well, dried roses are even worse! LoL The camera picks up every very dry area and makes a spectacular blown-out highlight. You wouldn’t think a photograph of roses would be accompanied by some rather awful growling noises on the part of the photographer but maybe those growls added some texture. :-D

Your stills are so beautiful & inspirational Holly. I love the texture of the dried roses. The roses and the beautiful pot compliment each other so well. Your daughter is going to have a gorgeous portfolio of her pottery!
Holly Cawfield replied
Renee, that is a lovely comment….I’m still learning still life so it’s your comment that’s inspirational. Thank you so much!! :-)
DiEtte Henderson
I love your style Holly, you really know how to capture a still life. A fave for me.
Holly Cawfield replied
What a lovely thing to say DiEtte!!! Thank you for that kind comment and for the fave! :-)
Jan Piller
Gorgeous Holly!! This one looks great framed in the black.
Holly Cawfield replied
Thanks Jan!! :-)
I like it with the black too….although I’m thinking this one might go on canvas.
Von McKnelly
Words can never describe perfection so I won’t even try.
Holly Cawfield replied
Thank you Von….I’m very grateful for that comment! :-)
Janis Zroback
I think the photo is stunning….the vase is wonderful….where does she sell her work?
Holly Cawfield replied
Thank you so much Janis!! I’ll pass along your comment to my daughter.
She hasn’t started selling yet….although I think it won’t be long before she is. Her big problem right now is that she keeps giving away her work ….which just may have something to do with the fact that the entire family has their hands outstretched as they cry, ‘gimme’. :-)
Kathy Reid
Holly you have achieved your task extremely well, the textures of the dried roses and your daughters rustic pottery compliment each other.
Holly Cawfield replied
Thank you so much Kathy. I really wasn’t sure at first what to use with this vase and tried a few different things. I’m glad you think the roses work! :-)
Kate Adams
Well Holly I have studied this image for over 5 minutes and like Von say’s words cannot describe perfection!!.. Stunning!!!
Holly Cawfield replied
Wow Kate….I’m thrilled you think that. Thank you so much!!! :-)

This is a wonderful composition Holly! Everything just blends so well together. You picked the perfect background! It really compliments the texture of the roses and the vase. I just want to add that I really enjoy the mother and daughter teamwork that goes into you photos! All I have left to say is BRAVO!!! :-)
Holly Cawfield replied
Oh Dave…again such a wonderful comment. Thank you so much. It’s amazing to me how long a still life takes…and a big part of that for me is trying to work out a background I think, and hope, will work. I’m so glad you think this one does.
Ah….the mother/daughter team….it’s just the best fun. But then I have the best daughter ever! :-)
Dave Moilanen
That’s great Holly!! Cheers to you both!! :-)
Janis Zroback
If you are in Toronto…the summer oout door art show at City Hall is calling for submissions right now…

Incredible lighting and detail. I just don’t know if my fav parts are the roses or the pottery. I LOVE that piece of pottery. Holly, you are tying all the pieces together to create such beauty and grace in your compositions. Not just simple artistry…..but you have shared the story with us as well. You have brought out the still waning beauty of the dried roses and their lovely textures as the light hits them. Okay…...I want to be pres of your fan club!
Holly Cawfield replied
Oh my Carolyn….thank you for this dear friend. I’ve already told Katie that you LOVE the pottery and now I’m looking forward to borrowing some more from her next week so it’s going to be interesting and fun to see what I can come up with for those pieces.

Great work again Holly on the textures in this shot – I just love the delicate look of the shot they almost look like the petals are about to disintergrate.

Check their website…I don’t know if they have reached the deadline yet…I remember seeing the notice in my VAO newsletter…if not that one, there are some smaller ones like the Queen west show and the Cabbagetown show…if not a show, then check stores like Ardith One on Yonge and Lawrence and see if they would take her work on consignment…they specialize in hand made pottery…or they used to…
Holly Cawfield replied
You’re a wealth of information Janis!! Thanks for that!! I’m writing all these down so I can send the info to my daughter. :-)
