Pottery, Potatoes And Pearl Onions
You know, the wonderful thing about still life is that the subject is still ....a very big plus after spending so much time trying to get macro shots of flowers that blow willy nilly in the slightest breeze and create a memory card full of out of focus shots. The other thing that I’m loving is the way the subject doesn’t mind all the fiddling ….being arranged and re-arranged…although I do think I heard a bit of a squeak from these onions and potatoes. They may have been on the verge of going on strike after all the manhandling. :-D

Holly, I think I love your narrative as much as this beautiful still life. I so love how many opportunities there are with photography, how many genres. You have such a knack for seeing these images in your mind. My genre requires me to find my subjects. You must see images in your imagination, and then create them. I just love your work with still life, Holly.
Holly Cawfield replied
Thanks David! :-) Isn’t it the truth about photography. It’s always so interesting to me to see other people’s work and how they view a particular subject and then interpret it in a photograph or painting. I do rather see pictures in my imagination but only partially. It all sort of evolves as I go along. Most of the time I download and then go back and re-shoot….I re-shoot a lot!! :-D

Hi Holly, your fabulous way with the light and knack for arranging turns the most mundane objects into works of beauty! :))
Holly Cawfield replied
Annemarie, you really make such lovely comments….thank you so much for this one! It’s really appreciated. :-)
monaiman
I wouldn’t dare crossing your border Holly !? stillness and roses are your specialty now ;) Another wonderful shot !!!
Holly Cawfield replied
LoL Mona! No!!! Not more roses!!! aaaaargh…. (kidding of course) After another day of them I don’t think I want to do any more roses for a while!!! LoL
Renee Dawson
I love your sense of humor Holly. I can relate to your frustration with the flowers blowing in the breeze – only my frustration usually comes from thousands of rear end shots of little songbirds that I have feverishly tried to capture in flight…lol Another beautiful still….so inspiring!
Holly Cawfield replied
Oh my gosh….laughed right out loud at that Renne!! I’ve tried photographing birds without much success and it’s very much as you’ve said…lots of little behinds flying away from me in a blur!! Thanks for the laugh and the comment!! :-)
Kate Adams
Fabulous again Holly..I just love your work more with every one you do, you are so lucky to be able to toss everything up and the air and it will land exactly where you want it to be lol.you have such an eye for lighting, colour and arrangement…nuff said…this is so beautiful!!!
Holly Cawfield replied
hahahaha…..Love it!! Yep, that’s right…just toss ‘em all and see where they land. :-D
Thanks Kate!!! :-D
lorilee
Beautifully rich colors – wonderful!!!!!!
Holly Cawfield replied
Thank you so much Lorilee!! It’s fun to see what one can do with the versatile potato! :-D
Joseph Rieg
Are the onion crying? Lovely, Holly.
Holly Cawfield replied
Ha!! Almost as much as I was trying to get the set-up Joseph! :-D
Thanks!! :-)

Holly, Holly, Holly. What can be said? Your still life’s have a life of there own. All your photos go beyond the ‘pretty picture’ scenario. This one I can see caring, tenderness, patience and respect. The love of your craft really shines through!! The best part is that all your work comes with a little piece of your heart and soul. :-)
Trust me, I think that all of your subjects loved the attention you gave them!!
Holly Cawfield replied
Oh my. Dave, this is such a wonderful comment. I hardly know what to say ….thank you so much!!! Bless you. :-)
Pat Lucas
There is nothing left for me to say!!!! All of the above and more! Simply stunning work Holly. I had to have a little chuckle to myself over Kate Adams comment…you have such an eye for lighting,,I remember back in the PG days…..”Watch the lighting” lol. Well, I have to agree with her now though, you’ve certainly got that weighed off. Just perfect.
Holly Cawfield replied
LoL Pat! I chuckled at that comment of Kate’s too.
:
D….watch the light indeed! I’m so glad the gang came to RB….it’s been a whole new world hasn’t it?)Thanks for the comment Pat! (Sheesh, it’s hard to think of you as Pat and not Plukie!! ) :
Jan Piller
Poor manhandled potatoes! Oh Holly, you’ve done it again. You are the Queen of Composition. I bow down to you. (I think her royal hiney should be handing out pottery to her peasants as a token of her appreciation! I’m sure she could find another peasant someplace that will make lots of bowls for her! hehehe)
Holly Cawfield replied
hahahahaha…...I’ll make a call to the ‘peasant’ and see if she’s willing to send along some gifts!
Thanks so much Jan….you’re a good friend! :-)
Carolyn Staut
Superb! Perfection! Fantastic! Original! Beautiful! Classic! Style and Grace! Okay, out of adjectives for now Holly. You are such an amazing artist and you have found another unique and creative niche in which you completely shine.
Holly Cawfield replied
Does that mean you think it’s okay Carolyn? :-)
Thank you so much….you are the kind of encourager that makes other people grow artistically!!!
Joanne Bradley

Holly Cawfield replied
Thank you DiEtte….for the comment and the fave!!! :-)
hardhhhat
oh er you like all this manhandling of your subjects – when you start doing people I am not sure they will be so happy about that :) great composition and shot – looks a little dark but I am sure that’s my tiny 10” netbook monitor :)
Holly Cawfield replied
LoL HH! I often wonder how photographers manage to deal with people…I’m sure there must be times when they want to ‘manhandle’ them….right out of the studio!!! :-D
Barb Leopold
Gorgeous Holly and your little story made me chuckle…. so true, so true!! You tell those onions and potatoes to behave or they will be straight in the cooking pot, LOL!! Which they probably will be anyway!!!
Holly Cawfield replied
LoL Barb!!! Next time a potato or an onion give me a hassle I’m going to use that threat!!! :-D
DesImages
Threaten the subjects with soup or deep frying if they won’t behave! Seriously, those pinky purple tones are beautiful and timeless. Wonderful shot!
Holly Cawfield replied
hahahaha…...try explaining that threat to the kitchen police!
Thanks Des….I’m glad you like it! :-)
rosedew

Holly Cawfield replied

KMorral
I’m sure they loved the manhandling! Beautiful, deep dark colours and arrangement, makes for a fantastic sombre and rich image! I think that the time spent was worth it. Simple and effective

viennablue
amazing work, I love this piece for its tonality. Excellent lighting to get this. I have to say I do love potatoes, though usually to eat. My husband says its the Irish in me. Excellent work
Holly Cawfield replied
I’m so glad you like the effect of the low light in this Vienna….it’s one of my goals to be able to do more still life work with this sort of ambience although it doesn’t always work out the way I want it to. Thank you so much for this comment!!! :-)
Kathryn Potempski
Wow the lighting here is pure Magic ,I will keeping my out for 20010 calendered Holly.
Holly Cawfield replied
Thanks Kathryn!! I’m so glad you like it. This kind of light isn’t everyone’s cup of tea although it’s one of my own favourites. I think it’s that I’m always reminded of old oil paintings and they’ve always held a great appeal for me.
It will probably take until 2010 to get all the pottery photographed…she’s producing at quite a rate lately when I go up north to visit my daugher next week I’m coming home with a big box….lots of challenges ahead!! :-)
John44
Holly.. The French say in a situation like this: Chapeau ! (hat off)
You know .. we all make some nice photo’s now and than.. sometimes pure luck..
What I admire so much here .. is that it is a whole series of fantastique Art work.. made on a particular style on purpose.
That is ‘mastering’ the art.
I realy admire this!
John
Holly Cawfield replied
John, that is such an incredible comment….thank you so much for that. I keep saying that I’m only just learning still life and it’s very true….there’s just so much to learn about the genre….but I think I’ve found an area of photography that is a ‘fit’ for me or at least it’s something I enjoy most of what I’ve tried so far. Thank you again….I am humbled by your wonderful comment. :-)
Beve Brown-Clark
Incredible…full of rich colors, textures and oooOOOOOoooo so perfect lighting….care to share your secerts or successes with us?? :^)
Holly Cawfield replied
Wow….thanks for that wonderful comment Beve! Secrets?? I don’t really have any….mostly there’s a lot of trial and error with exposure and processing but if there’s one thing I concentrate on the most it’s light….just constantly watching the effects of it when I’m outdoors or when indoors moving objects around until I find the light I want.
Barbara Brown
I love the rich tones!!
Holly Cawfield replied
Thank you Barbara!! :-)
