Blizzard On The Farm

Blizzard On The Farm

The winds were really whipping up the snow the day I took this. It was the same day I took Blizzard Sunset and the sky was most unusual with bits of sun filtering through the snow and clouds.

  • Holly Cawfield replied

Thanks Darryl!! LoL….a bit cold? LoL It was freezing!! And the wind was about 60km per hour! A very good reason to pursue still life photography. :-D

Wow,.......A wonderful weather depicting capture! I feel chilled just viewing this! The deep and thick stormy clouds, the wind blowing the dry grasses and snow is amazing! The framing is wonderful, as the viewer’s eyes follow the fence line into the rest of this wonderful stormy capture! An instant fav for me! : )

  • Holly Cawfield replied

Wow…what a great comment Sandy! Thank you so much….and thanks for the fav! :-)

You definitely captured the elements of our winters Holly, and despite them turned in a remarkable composition!

  • Holly Cawfield replied

Thank you so much for such a lovely comment Joanne! One thing about winter, at least the extremes of winter not the dull dishwater weather of March, is that we’ve got lots of photo ops…..if we don’t freeze our appendages off while trying to shoot them! :-D

What a wonderful Canadian winter scene that has a timeless quality to it. I love the clouds, their ominous look, the blowing snow, and the fence taking us into the image. The human structures seem to be standing strong against the best nature can muster. There is a power about the buildings. Red seems such an appropriate colour for them. Wonderful, Holly.

  • Holly Cawfield replied

David, this is a truly lovely comment and I thank you for it. I think there’s something timeless about farm pictures… at least for me there is. Perhaps it’s about the classic image of provision….and if I’ve managed a timelessness in this then I’ve succeeded with this shot and grateful to have done so. :-)

Great shot Holly. Really conveys the cold aspect of the shot well, that and I love barns.

  • Holly Cawfield replied

Thank you so much John! To convey something as ‘unseen’ as temperature is a bit of a head scratcher sometimes….I’m glad this seems to have done that. :-)

Brrrrrr-r-r-r-r So cold, so desolate, makes me want to bundle up! Such a natural moment in time that gives the viewer a real sense of the chill of winter. Beautifully composed Holly.

  • Holly Cawfield replied

Thank you so much Carolyn! It’s amazing to me at times the way light or weather conditions can change a scene so radically. Each time I drive by this farm (which is fairly often) I think of this day and the way it made the farm appear quite magical to me. Most days it’s just an ordinary farm. :-D Since I took up photography I have a new appreciation for a blizzard. LoL

Wow what a great dramatic looking scene – how did you protect your camera while taking this shot? The sky does have some unusual colours in it – must get and visit Canada sometime – I do have relatives over there but not been in contact for lots of years now.

  • Holly Cawfield replied

HH, you’re clever in your question about the camera. It was quite a feat to keep it covered as much as possible in all the blowing snow. In fact, the snow was blowing so hard that it felt like needles on my face. I had to keep my coat open so I could tuck the camera in there….then try to figure out the shot without using the viewfinder because I wasn’t going to expose the camera any more than necessary. As it was, it took a bit of cloning to clear the spots that hit the lens. The sky was almost weird that day….in Blizzard Sunset the sky and snow became quite mauve. In some other shots I have from the day the sun came out in the midst of the storm and the sky had many streaks of pink and gold….all so unusual when a snowy day normally means a very grey or white sky. A lot of what appears to be clouds here is blowing, billowing snow. I haven’t seen a day like it since but I do keep my eyes open.

Wow stunning shot Holly, love the effect of the wind had on the snow, It looks very cold:)

  • Holly Cawfield replied

Thanks Kathy! The effect of the wind on snow is great for photography…..not so great when we’re driving through it though! LoL Fortunately, this was on a very lonely country road but the whiteouts were awful…great conditions for landing in the ditch! :-D

  • Holly Cawfield replied

Thank you Des! Ahhh yes, the joys of a Canadian winter means we get lots of forceful weather. :-D
