Shallots In A Pottery Bowl

With the snow on the ground it’s the perfect opportunity to stay indoors and play with some still life photography…..and stay warm. :) Not only does the grocery store provide some ‘photographic fodder’ but so does my daughter. This time instead of flowers it’s one of her pieces of pottery. She began to learn the craft a few months ago and she may just find pieces missing after one of my visits to her home! :)

Hey! Steal one of those bowls for me too! Everything is perfect about this image. I have to believe you made the backdrop to match the bowl!

  • Holly Cawfield replied

I’d be happy to pilfer for Piller Jan! I noticed she has some very fine mugs so I’ll see what I can do for you! :-D

Thanks for the comment….and yes, I did work the background around the bowl.

Superb Holly. Love how you have used the warmth in the colors of the shallots to compliment the green pottery. The pottery is gorgeous as well! There is an Old World feel to this, as though created by one of the old masters. Absolutely Fabulous!

  • Holly Cawfield replied

Awwww…thank you kind friend. The ‘old world’ feel is precisely what I was trying to achieve. And with a bit of an ‘I told you so’ I will pass along your comment about the bowl to my daughter. :-)

Just a lovely still life, your composition and sense of color is remarkable and your backgrounds so wonderful almost all your photos looks like paintings! The bowl is beautiful and the shallots give it a touch of simple and honest function as well!

Gracious Joanne….what a wonderful compliment you have paid me. Thank you so very much. That bowl is indeed a very functional thing too….it’s sitting here on my desk so I can not only use it but admire my daughter’s work. :-)

Another fantastic shot , do you use a back drop for your shots Holly ?

  • Holly Cawfield replied

Thanks Kathryn! I use a backdrop sometimes although I haven’t found one I would use on a consistent basis….at least in terms of a textured typle of background. What I do is shoot against a neutral colour…black, white or grey….and then add textures at various opacities with different light in layers. It’s all very fiddlely and quite time consuming and sometimes my eyes start crossing….but I love developing the backgrounds building them up a layer at a time.
