First Impressions

This is Dundern Castle in Hamilton, Ontario. It’s a rather imposing sort of house much along the lines of an English country house but not of the same magnitude of most of those. However, for ‘these here parts’ it’s a pretty impressive building and considering that it was built in colonial times it quite amazes me since the area was such a wilderness in those days.

I’ve tried with this perspective to convey a bit of the grandeur of this house for these columns do indeed make quite a first impression. The fact that the sky was such a rich blue seemed to emphasize that to my way of thinking.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a massive portico. It kind of dwarfs the house but it’s a super shot Holly

  • Holly Cawfield replied

You just made me chuckle Jacqi…it is something of a Jimmy Durante portico, isn’t it. :-D

Thanks HH! Gotta love that late afternoon sun in the winter.

I’ve taken so many angles of this place and just kept binning them until I decided to move closer.

beautiful, an English house with the Roman type columns out front, it certainly would have been a very stately place when first built…well captured Holly.

  • Holly Cawfield replied

Thank you Bill. :-) It’s a rather handsome house and set on the most beautiful grounds overlooking Lake Ontario. I just looked up the build date and apparently it was completed in 1835….which makes it quite historic for this area.
