If you’ve been married more than once
And been engaged in serial romance
You might not be best qualified
And your strict morality mollified
When you speak of family values

If you have a child but no spouse
And you condemn another’s house
You might not be best suited
Or quite as holy as reputed
If you speak of family values

If you condemn the single mom
And your daughter gets pregnant at the prom
You might want to rethink your stand
And pull your head out of the sand
Then you speak of family values

When you go to Church to pray
And openly condemn the gays
While your brother is in the closet
Closely examine the truths you posit
Before you speak of family values

If you protest school sex education
But won’t engage your kids in conversation
Then your son comes home with a disease
You should teach the birds and bees
Before you speak of family values

Clean your own house and leave me to mine
My family is for me to define
Nothing matters more than this:
To live and love and to peacefully exist
This is family values

It is always so much easier for ‘some’ to look at others with a critical eye than to look what is in their own backyard. Looking in your own backyard I believe is always an ongoing process….there are always the weeds to tend to, plants to water, new plants to nuture….. I am not as aware about the world as I maybe should be but I do know that I have my heart first in my own backyard with the desire of being a consistent gardener.

  • H M Bascom replied

So right you are Arcadia! Once we start spending our time judging others by an impossibly high standard the weeds will take over in our own gardens. Thank you for reading and for your insightful comment.

    Gregory John O...

Good one Helen. Nice read…..................... with the majority of crime commited by a family member on another family member, I wonder what family values really are….

  • H M Bascom replied

I sure as hell don’t want my family to end up like the dysfunctional collection of mentally ill people I hear spitting and shitting about family values on the daily news. Gimme a break! I want to shout at them to stop beating your wife, cheating on your husband, abusing your own children, THEN come talk to me about family values. Thanks for reading Gregory.

Wow Helen ... this is priceless along with a crusty old cunt.. you says it like it is.. OUr own pie is the key. I find that being here is a huge lesson for me time after time.. when I feel like I am ‘loosing’ someone or something to the ‘not knowing’ of the other.. I have to go to me and find out what I can do right now to stop thinking about things I can really know nothing about unless I see the person or talk with them.. and even then.. nothing is guarenteed that what they say or do means anything ….’true’.. so what is all I know is me. how can I be true to me… and you always bring up the stuff that reminds me that this is so. Your a great Artist and Writer Helen and I am so glad to share time with you here.

  • H M Bascom replied

Thank you for your inspirational comment linaji. I am the one who is honored and privileged by the fact that you take time from your life to listen to me. I am eternally grateful. :-)
