Politics of PETA
There seems to be a Left versus Right political battle for PETA – not to win them over but to make the other side take them.
On the Right hand Michelle Malkin, the ultra conservative right wing blog queen, puts PETA into her radical Left Wing Animal Rights Wackos category. Ms. Malkin considers PETA a leftist group and she never misses an opportunity attack PETA like a rabid beaver on a birch tree.
On the Left hand Gary L. Francione wants PETA to be recognized as part of the reactionary right. “Is there anything more reactionary than PETA’s relentless sexism or its giving awards to people like Pat Buchanan or Arnold Schwarzenegger?” asks Professor Francione. “In any event, it is simply not accurate to make a blanket generalization that the American animal rights movement is leftist.”
The Right needs PETA to be on the Left otherwise Mad Beaver Malkin will have to edit her Animal Rights Wacos category. The Left is trying to push PETA off on the Right since violence is definitely not a Leftist value. In the middle is PETA, trudging along saving turkeys and exploiting people.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is an animal rights group founded on the belief that animals are not ours to use for food, clothing, experimentation or entertainment. Since 1980, PETA has grown from a handful of volunteers to an international organization with more than 1,800,000 members and supporters.

I’m a PETA supporter. Why? Because they get results. The fact that Michele Maulkin doesn’t like them makes me even prouder to be a member. I am a proud animal rights person as well. They are the wacos! The issue is not the exploitation of people but the cruelty and exploitation of animals. PETA has one agenda; to stop the cruelty and abuse of animals in all forms, wherever it occurs. Long live PETA!

I love animals and I think PETA does good work for sure! I just think it is crazy that PETA is being used like a political ping pong ball.
H M Bascom replied
Oh and if Michelle Malkins hates it, it must be good. :-)

Indeed. During the previous administration PETA and it’s members were called “terrorists.”
Why, because they freed animals from vivisection labs! Woooo… so dangerous!

Saving animals from horrible torture – I support that 100%.

i think animals need to be respected, they are a part of life. PETA does some great work, for sure but i dont agree with all their tactics… animal testing is a way of life, we need to do it to progress, combat evolving viruses and human needs. i could go on but i wont lol
:)

A lot of bad things were in the past a “way of life.” There must be a better way.

There are apparently computer programs that can now effectively test responses so that animals are not needed. Anytime that’s possible, we should use that avenue. Furthermore there are still Beagles and monkeys overdosed on cigarettes and fed things like mascara to see their reaction. If we don’t know the effects of cigarettes by now… and eating mascara? Duh, okay, so add a warning, it’s dangerous to feed this to your child. There is a lot of unnecessary testing. Why? Because it makes the money go ‘round (I guess.)
And if it weren’t for Peta, we would not have known about the downed cows that were being turned into hamburger for school kids, nor the poor pigs getting tortured by the pig-hands, and many more issues they bring to light. Social awareness is one of the things they do best.
There is a radical contingency; but it’s certainly not representative of everyone or even most of those actively involved in Peta.

Oh, you wanted to discuss left and right wing ridiculousness, right? LOL. Oops, sorry, lost the point there. :))

I am a Member of PETA and although their tactics are sometimes outrageous, they get their
point across. Being an animal rights activist, and believing that animals should not be used
for experimentation, clothing, food, etc., and knowing how many animals PETA has saved
I fully back this organization…but think it is ridiculous that it is now being used for
political purposes. xoxooxxo

While I don’t condone vandalism, I always considered PETA a fine example of Left Wing activism. PETA gets the job done (as someone said earlier).

I don’t see how they can class animal rights supporters as left or right on the political scale. I think you will find the full spectrum..
One of the only issues that PETA has taken on that I disagree with is Mulesing , weere skin is cut from around the arse of a sheep to prevent fly strike. I grew up in a rural area, worked on farms, worked as a young teenager for a local Vetinary Surgeon; and have seen first hand how quickly a sheep or lamb can be fly struck and how agonising the death is… Flies here are a big problem for farmers. A sheep can be clean one day and be suffering fly strike the next and dead the next. Farms here a huge, many over 100,000 acres.. If mulesing is stopped, farmers will never be able to control Fly strike and the stock will suffer far worse… The costs of wool and lamb meat will sky rocket … The sheep will suffer !!
On the who is a terrorist or terrorist organisation, Blue Wedges a environment protection group, that protested the deeping of the Rip, the entrance to Port Phillip Bay in Victoria, Australia, was added to the US National Security Agencies list of Security Risks …. Why ? Because the US wanted the entrance deepened so their largests aircraft carriers and war ships could visit….
Protest against anything and you will be labeled a lefty, terrorist security risk..

Pick up a sign, get on a list. . . . that’s the way of it these days. :-(
