Second Look On 7th Street
Dare to wear red in a black and white world.
Although the Louisville Cardinals is the home town college basketball team in Louisville, Kentucky USA, people are so rabid insane about University of Kentucky (located in Lexington Kentucky USA) that anyone wearing the Cardinal red colors (in stead of Wildcat blue) always get a second look.
They say that in Kentucky, University of Kentucky Wildcats isn’t just about basketball, it’s a religion.

The red penguins along the building are a marketing tactic for the art gallery housed in the building.

Great use of selective color, Helen. It’s same here about the Tarheels. My problem is that I don’t like baby blue much.
H M Bascom replied
Funny thing about this shot Patricia, it wasn’t a lot of work to do the selective color for this work. Everyone in the shot was wearing black except the two tourists. The buildings and street are gray, the fellow walking with the one wearing the Cardinal shirt, had a white tee shirt over black long sleeve shirt with blue jeans. I only had to reduce the saturation on the jeans and skin tones.

COmpletely Brilliant…

No really most people wouldn’t have put the vivid RED in this shot… Isee what you mean that all were wearing black but…. Still it took forsight to envision how perfect this shot woulf look with the red highlighting everything as it does….
H M Bascom replied
Wow, really thanks so very much Loco. I thought it was just so odd that the penguins are red, only one person wearing a red shirt, and the DON’T WALK sign is a red hand. I really appreciate you recognizing the elements of this shot.
ClintF
Great photo, love the clean crisp black and white along with the vivid reds.
SkyFox
This is a great piece, so very well done in selective color!
Jen Cannella
Weather or not it was difficult, it is a great shot. I love how everyone is looking at that guy…Maybe because he is crossing with a don’t walk sign on and is about to get smooshed! Like your story too!
Marion Cullen
Is that a smile I see on the dissenters face?
Made me smile anyway…never got that whole fanatical sports thing, (runs and ducks for cover). ;-)
H M Bascom replied
I have difficulty understanding the sports fanatic too. :-)
Leon Walker

Yeah and Rick Pitino, a New Yorker is their coach. “GO BIG BLUE!”, IS UK’S cry. But who cares the shot has so many incredible themes going on. Just superb Helen.
H M Bascom replied
Hey Marty!!! Pitino left UK and now coaches UofL. How’s that for irony?

Great photo and selective coloring. I live in Lexington and don’t watch basketball, well, not since Kenny “Sky”Walker graduated a while back. How insane does that make me? My daughter is a Cards football fan. Love your composition.
