Bread Basket

Here in the Crossroads of America, the primary agricultural crops are soybeans, ranked 4th in the nation and corn, currently the 5th largest producer in the nation. In addition, Indiana currently ranks 5th in the nation with hogs as its primary livestock.

Two and a half million rural children, a fifth of all rural children, live in poverty, compared to 15 percent for children living in metropolitan areas. One in five rural children lived in food insecure households in 2000—food insecurity and hunger are more prevalent in rural America than in the nation as a whole.

A fabulous HDR shot and work, a marvellous sky and the way the sunlight is going right accross the field , a lovely shot.

I just love that American Flag on the top of the grain storage. Ha Ha. It doesn’t get any more rural America than that.

Hi Irene. Thank you so much for the compliment, but it isn’t HDR. This is a technique that I developed using 2 different software programs.

Gotta fly that flag! Indoctrination in a subtle form.

I am so glad you picked up on the fences. In this section of Indiana, there are miles of that ugly chain fence. Most of them have razor wire stretched across the top. Every where I look I see the fence and the razor wire. So, I decided, Well this is my world, why not show for what it is.

Sometimes I feel fenced in, but mostly I feel fenced out. Thank you for your comment. It means a lot to me.

Great photo! I love the contrasts – ground and sky, blue and gold, rural and industrial, the great outdoors but all fenced in, and of course your comments about food production and food poverty.

Beautiful shot, Helen. Makes me homesick. Great writing, too. I don’t think the world knows what hard times the American Midwest has fallen on. Especially recently.

How any 1st world country can be in this state is a travesty, how the WORLDS’ richest country can be in this state is an absolute crime against humanity.

    Helen, Thank you.
