Great perspective – was this “from the handbag” (as opposed to “from the hip”) shooting?!!??
Karen Cook, 2 months ago
Great perspective Helen. Love that strong chequered pattern and great red chairs!
Estelle O'Brien, 2 months ago
I love this Helen- great shot. The angle really lends itself to the diagonals on the lino (or tiles) on the floor. One of the many things we noticed when in the States was that diners are still everywhere- we don’t really have them here. We have restaurants, cafes, fish n chip shops and of course the ubiquitous Golden Arches in every town (which we call maccas) and the usual transnational chain junk food places….but not diners as you have them. Your diners seem to have a delicious 50s feel to them.
Helen Bascom KMA in reply to Rosalie Dale IPA’s comment, 2 months ago
Hi Rosalie. LOL The owners of this Diner know me. I take Malcolm there for veggie pizza lunch once each week. I was crouched on the floor shooting this while Malcolm consumed his lunch. We were the only customers at that moment, so I took advantage of the empty restaurant.
Helen Bascom KMA in reply to Estelle O'Brien’s comment, 2 months ago
I studied this image for a couple of weeks before I decided to post it. It isn’t your usual round red bar stools at the counter shot.
I was struck by how the tiles drew the eye to the back of the empty restaurant. This shot really takes on a life of its own viewed full screen on my LCD monitor. It’s like you can walk right in and sit down.
I think it turned out fairly well.
John Douglas, 2 months ago
yes the ever-increasing divide between poor and those with money certainly doesn’t lend itself to eating out much, or at all for most of us now it seems. Vegie pizza sounds delicious!

Lovely shot, Helen, but sad that you were able to produce it, I don’t remember EVER being the only adult in a diner.

fantastic shot Helen,,, love the contrasting colours, and the perspective is wonderful,,, well done
Lumineux, 2 months ago
Nice little piece of Americana Helen. Not your usual perspective but it works well, and your choice of selective colouring comes off really well here too, along with the patterns on the floor it helps lead the eye and draws us to those empty chairs.
danpatmore, 2 months ago
great composition for all the different angles shapes and shaders going on in this frame. Like Estelle I’m in the UK and so I’m always envious of diners, I love the decor

PHILLIPEDOAN, 2 months ago
Helen: Let me pose this valid question out of envy but not as extreme as ‘jealousy’
-because I have done my duties as an aesthetician: Why is it that when Helen Bascom posts a new work of art, everybody including their mothers via RB, except for mine, would rush just to leave you such positive comments and critiques? But when it comes to PHILLIPEDOAN’s art, he only gets his loyal fans and friends, which is a very small clique when compares to YOUR fan-club…Okay okay I AM JUST KIDDING FOLKS!!!! Helen, I LOVE YOU AS MUCH AS I LOVE Noam Chomsky and drugs and mens and of course Modern Art. Bravo with this awesome piece especially pertinent to the angle(s) of the shot-which brings about some form of artistic “perspective”—is it “linear perspective” or “aerial perspective” folks? The red chairs with the black tables and etc are very clean and classy and anarcho-syndicalistic. The checkered floor pushes EVERYTHING else backward, therefore it becomes the dominant motif. Congratulations MaMa, again. You and your art are as phenomenal as the messages that the latter are often portrayed. I will stop here…Oh, only one complaint: Where are all the fukkin’ mens looking like their sexxy idol by the name of James Dean, with their haircuts and rebel-fashion? Maybe you should install them in just for me to drool? LOLOL.Helen Bascom KMA in reply to PHILLIPEDOAN’s comment, 2 months ago
I love you Phillipe! You are a mad man. I remember when you uploaded your first piece to RedBubble. I said, “there is an artist who is true!” I have been so overwhelmed with trying to handle the Current Issues group all by myself, do my art, write, sell my art, take care of my little Malcolm (who always comes first), whew.
I don’t really have a fan club, I think everyone is just waiting for the next big “kiss my fucking ass” political photo. And I won’t disappoint. I just need a little break from the political art. It can bleed your soul dry, you know.
I live in freaking Indiana. There are no sexy James Dean types here. But just for you my darling Phillipe, I will find one!

Wonderful shot that brings back memories of road trips as a child – what a treat it was to get to have breakfast at a diner like this! Love that it still exists and that you created such a nostalgic photo with the great angle and the selective coloring.

must be a few of these diners around. I think Zolton has a picture taken in one. I agree with Paul – red, black, white so good together
