Jack 'O Lantern Mushroom by Rusty Katchmer

Canvas Prints

Available to buy on…

Found today on an old stump…Esopus Meadows trail, Ulster county, NY USA.
A poisonous mushroom easily confused with the edible Chanterelle for the uninformed mushroom collector. Slight differences make all the difference. These always grow in clusters on old wood, whereas the chanterelles grow on the ground scattered about. These have sharp gills whereas the chanterelles have ridges beneath the cap. These also are a deep orange color, whereas the chanterelles are usually a lighter color.

Awesome find ! Do they glow in the dark ?

  • Yes, they do glow in the dark. I brought one home and viewed it in total darkness one night. Once my eyes got adjusted to the dark, I could see a green glow…so cool :-)

Love the camera perspective and how you also captured some of the environment in which the mushrooms grow! Great job in also capturing the texture and gleam of the mushrooms! Beautiful shot! :)

  • Thanks so much Sandy, for your glowing comments :-)

These are great, it’s been a great fall for finding so many varieties!

  • I agree..It’s been a good season for mushrooms, especiially during the summer. I’m not finding much lately…or at least not anything exciting.
