Until last week, when I came this close to one, I never realised that the “Black Cattle” of Galloway and the Scottish Borders are actually the most amazing garnet colour. I knew they were the origin of the word “blackmail”, but it was news to me that they weren’t black! They certainly look black from a distance. I’ve since been told they are also called “ruby coos”, and that seems entirely appropriate.
This young lady was on a farm near Dumfries, in South West Scotland.
