Artist's Description

Until last week, when I came this close to one, I never realised that the “Black Cattle” of Galloway and the Scottish Borders are actually the most amazing garnet colour. I knew they were the origin of the word “blackmail”, but it was news to me that they weren’t black! They certainly look black from a distance. I’ve since been told they are also called “ruby coos”, and that seems entirely appropriate.

This young lady was on a farm near Dumfries, in South West Scotland.

Soft pastel and pastel pencil on Art Spectrum Colourfix A4 approx. Original available.

Here is my Ruby Coo as an everyday card

and as a print

I’ve never actually been this close to a cow since I was a Girl Guide and found a cow chewing the guyropes of my tent…
