I opened my eyes and was startled to see the Inspector’s face close to mine,he seemed most concerned, I jumped and he jumped back. ‘Are you alright?’ he asked ‘I think you fainted miss’ he said.
‘No, I didn’t Inspector, I have been to one of the places of my ‘dreams’. I call them that because I don’t know what else to call them. I cannot tell you where I was precisely but I have some bearings and we must hurry, there is a child there and in danger. We must get him out before anything happens to him’ this last I almost shouted at him.
Hastily I told him the details of my vision and he wasted no time in contacting his headquarters on his handset, to enquire if any incident had taken place recently, which would coincide with what I had told him. There was no such incident, but there had been a report in of a missing child, a small boy of around seven years of age. He had been fishing with some pals and had been last seen getting into a red car. Several hours has passed since then and his Mother was frantic. I bet she is, I thought.
‘Inspector, is there an aquaduct anywhere in the vicinity of where the child disappeared: I enquired.
’Not that I know of, but then, I don’t know that area very well, and of course it has been a while since he was last seen, and you know as well as I Emilia, with a fast car you can travel a lot of miles in an hour even’ as he finished speaking, his handset started to crackle. ’ Another message coming through, Can I use your telephone please, the are is too low lying for me to pick up anything on this thing’ he motioned the handset.
I nodded and pointed to the telephone on the table.
He quickly got through to his headquarters. When he returned the phone to its cradle he said ’ No joy, I am afraid he hasn’t been found yet, and I made enquiries, there is no aquaduct in the immediate vicinity. We will have to look elsewhere.’
‘Inspector, do you have a map’ I asked
‘I have one in my car, I can quickly get it’ and as he uttered the last word he was already half way out of the door of my cottage, ducking his head to avoid the low dark beams of the ceiling.
He returned only minutes later with an Ordnance Survey map of the surrounding district.
‘Here we are, no let’s have a look’ he said spreading the map on the floor, where there was more space to spread it out.
I got onto my hands and knees and looked for rivers, the tiny blue lines marked on it coming from all directions. |Next, I looked for canals and waterways, and an aquaduct, one which spanned a river at one spot.
’There’s one’ I cried pointing my finger to where an aquaduct actually crossed a river, I gave a sharp little shudder, and knew I was right.
’Let’s have a look dear’ the Inspector also dropped to his knees and viewed the area I was pointing at. ‘Knots end’ he murmured speculatively. ’It’s worth a try. I’ll just notify the lads at the station that I am out on a call’
