It was just another workday
consisting of circling through the small remote town,
in hopes of winning a few of the town folks’ favor.

A routine call took me to the house on the corner
where I was greeted with a warm welcome
from a woman who motioned for me to enter.

Suddenly I was swallowed up
by the unkempt hospitality of a home held hostage
by a small , mischievous person.

As I made my way through the clutter
to a safe spot on the couch
something caught my attention.

Over in the corner, with his teeth clinched with glee
stood a child pointing with a demanding soiled finger
towards a mass of trembling yellow fur lodged precariously
behind the refrigerator .

Here kitty kitty kitty yelled the child.

It took only one urgent glance
from the small yellow creature
to alert me to the fact
that a sift rescue was in order.

What is the fate of this kitten
I asked the lady of the house
and she began her tale of woe.

It appeared the small creature came to her
by way of her husband’s compassion for strays
who found their way upon his workplace.

So the story goes…

On a cold sub-zero winter morning
he came face to face
with the wide-eyed feline
whose plight he could not ignore.

He brought her home to get her out of the bitter cold
but alas the over-enthusiastic child
proved to be a most perilous threat to the sweet kitty.

She went on to tell me that unless a kinder fate could
save the small cat
she would have to take her to the shelter that very day.

I turned towards the direction of the family appliance
and there Muffin was peering up from beneath
with an extraordinary expression in her eyes
pleading with me to save her from this dreadful fate.

And I knew then in my heart that the rescue had begun
and she would journey home with me
far away from the dangers of her current situation.

where time was on her side
and the door to her freedom
was wide open forever.
