A koala holds onto a reflection of life past

Since European settlement, approximately 80% of Australia’s eucalypt forests have been decimated. Of the remaining 20% almost none is protected and most occurs on privately-owned land.

Settlers favoured the rich fertile lands along the eastern seaboard to have their farms and urban developments. Unfortunately, this is where the majority of koalas were already living because they also like to live in trees which are growing in fertile soils.

The main causes of loss of habitat include:

LAND CLEARING

Clearing of the land for expansion of human settlement eg:-
agriculture, housing, mining, forestry,factories and roads.
The results of this would include:-
· loss of habitat
· increased disturbance by humans
· injury or death from traffic
· injury or death from dogs and cats
· effects of garden pesticides getting into waterways
· increased competition for food and territory because of overcrowding
· increased stress on animals, making them more susceptible to disease.
It has also been documented that over 4000 koalas are killed each year by dogs and cars. It easy to see that the biggest threat to the Koala population is the human.

As long as the greed of the developer is satisfied everything can go. However the blood is not on the hands of the developer but the politicians with their big mouth to look green but refuse to DO anything to save these wonderful animals.

Thanks so much John, l don’t understand why our government/councils just does not see, they after all have the final say in anything that gets approved, surely it is more important to have the habitat remain not only for the welfare of the koala’s but the populus as well,it will be a very sad day when they are only able to be viewed in zoo’s because of our negligence, thanks for the link many others will be interested as well !

In many area’s koala’s have been wiped out, not only from devegetation but from disease and feral animals ,but their no1 enemy will always be humans ,l had one out in my tree that had been shot in the arm by some idiot by the time we got him down it was already to late and he had to be put down,they have enough to contend with without intentional cruelty as well :~~( thanks for taking a look Felicity :~~)

Thanks so much Jesika,its lovely to hear that somebody is trying to make a difference and putting things back to what they should be,l know Sth Australia has awful problems with salinity due to devegetation, we looked at buying a property over there but came up with that problem time and time again, sometimes here it is hard to decide whether to replant our acres though because of the ever impending threat of bushfire its such a balancing act xx

Thanks so much David, yes l think what we have now l fear won’t be around for our grandchildren to see,it is going to be a completely different world, what took millions of years to create we have managed to destroy in just under two hundred years with the advent of greenhouse gases and our narrow minded self indulgent attitudes, but hopefully we still have a little time to right the wrongs of the past, a hard job though when only ten percent at best of the population really give a thought about what is happening…........time will tell l guess

As we all know zoos are full with endangered species of all kinds of animals which you can’t find in nature anymore! Who are we to think we are better than the animals?
