The centerpiece of a medieval altar triptyk depicts Mother Mary as the heavenly Queen inside an omega shaped garland.
After the Reformation this was considered heretic…no saints were allowed any more, so the cabinet was hidden away in the attic. Instead a suffering Christ on the cross took her place
in all Swedish churches.
Wonderful madonna sculptures were used for cutting wood on and neglected in a great number of other ways. I am moved to tears when I get to see one of them that happens to have survived to our time.
I´m convinced that women cried over this loss of a female deity.They could no longer bring a cake to Mary´s altar on the day after childbirth when they were being allowed back into the congregation after the 40 days´banishment. This I have been told has been the custom.
