the heart yearns.........
this painting is about my sister who is sick with multiple sclerosis and taking care and doing everything to keep her husband alive, both were artists and musicians before their illnesses…it amazed me to see her pushing him in a wheelchair while using crutches and leg braces herself…i use items to symplozie how the heart still yearns to do the things they love but are now unable to do. the dolls represent the childhoods they never had. the ghost in the window is because my brother in law told me he sees dead people looking at him thru the window….the paint is mixed with my tears because i could not fight them throughtout the enitre painting….well…i changed the title because as of today december 6th, stephen has passed away, now i hope my sister can get thru this….... I also relate this to our soldiers in iraq, and anyone in a situation beyond their own control

Life is hard sometimes.I guess courage runs in the family ,have sclerosis is terribleand so suffering. The painting shows a great deal of mouvement and stillness at the same time ,life stop them in spite of their effort.I say that because of the roots trying to stop the wheels and the blood on the floor.Do they have help from a care center or something.I’m so sad for them….

Your painting and story is very moving. Thank you for sharing it with us. I can identify with the situation inasmuch as I live with postpolio syndrome and have been in a wheelchair now about 10 years. I originally had polio at the age of 3. My heart goes out to you and your loved ones.

you are an incredible artist – this would be an awesome piece of art without the story behind it, with the story, well, i send you love, condolences and peace.

Sorry I’m so late with condolences for your sister and family.
She is a strong and loving, caring person. I admire her immensely,
and you as well for putting such a family matter out there for all
of us to see true love and genuine caring for another human being.
Your work is powerful, carries a profound message and I love it all.
Only in the last few years of my life have I learned that helping others.
listening patiently, ceasing with the judgment calls, stepping outside
of me and merely giving another a smile heals thy own heart and gives
me an incredible sense of love for every human on this planet.
After all, we are here for such a short while so why waste precious
time wallowing in self pity, building lifelong resentments and avoiding
the spirit of peace and love. Acceptance of the hard fact that LIFE is not all
Ozzie and Harriet or Miss America or The Terminator, is sometimes
impossible for some to do. Your sister should have an award!

I’m finding it difficult to describe how great this is. I completely feel it. Even without your beautiful description all the emotions and symbolism are truly evident. Great composition – I get a sense of feeling trapped and the tragically unused dolls say a great deal in themselves. Poignant work Helene.

This is so moving Helene. I can relate to it 100% as my daughter is also in a wheelchair following a car accident. I can understand completely how difficult it would have been to paint it – artisitcally it is brilliant.

thank u so much, my prayers go out to your daughter….i ended up in one after an accidnet in 2001 , was told i may never walk again…thru the power of my gift to paint. i am walking and painting more than ever with a new found respect for the small things in life….becuase the things we do wothout thought every day are the things we miss the most when we r unable to do them….best wishes for your daughter and i truly hope she recovers…i find that painting relives my pain therefore i dont even take the meds….(hguess thats why i have over 500 paintings lol).blessings to yo and your family

oh Helene my heart goes out to you and your sister, i did cry when i read your story and this painting is an amazing tribute of how hard a time these two have had … the symbolism is very understandable and i find this image totally heart stopping …. just an excellent and poignant work of ART!!!!!!!!
RosaCobos, 2 months ago
I was going to favourite it..
but suddenly it as too full of frivolity.
This is not a matter of likes and dislikes…
But compassion and undesrstanding..
One of my borthers… seven years older than me… and my favourite.. until Lie for whatever reasons separated us…. or we lost our intimate contact….died from ELA at age 58. He did not have time to use any wheelchair… so I find that your sister is a heroine…and though time has passed since his spouse passed away… I sent her my company… my love…And you… my dear…. you have taken a path… and can see that it heals your soul. I oncce told you that your work remembered me a lot to Frida Kahlo´s..
all I can see is that here… you have turned the crippled body of a woman into a wheelchair… so you have humanized an artifact that can be the difference between selfdenial and selfrespect.
Rosa (your work is really “impresionante”, raw and utmost compassionate. Thanks for your visit dear helene)

man what a story Helene. heart breaking, how can think of one’s own suffering when confronted with this.
helene ruiz in reply to JohnThunderbird’s comment, about 1 month ago
yea….the “reality” of others sufferings sometimes feels “surreal” to our own…I guess u and i both share a similar ability to be like a “sponge” it is prevalent in ur work as we actually “feel” someone elses emotions and illness as though it was our own…and that is very draining, why it is important to release these emitions and feelings via our art…Peace to u John
JohnThunderbird, about 1 month ago
tx helene, and depression rules if one doesn’t somehow “down load” it. Your works are very confronting, they don’t come across as surreal to me, so much as dreams, but dreams are real for me also.

The tears flow
Nothing can be worse than an artist losing the ability to express themselves and the world in which they live.
Due to a childhood accident I am often in pain. Some days worse than others. We often fail to appreciate what we have until it is truly taken away. My heart goes out to them and many millions in the same place.
giovanni, about 1 month ago
truly touching and should serve as a reminder to all of us to appreciate each and every moment. i have watched my aunt deteriorate from alzheimers, and i cannot express in words how much i miss talking with her… now she no longer recognizes me or her son who she had cared for, for many years due to being both mentally and physically challenged… takes great courage to express yur soul, heart, in this way…
helene ruiz in reply to giovanni’s comment, about 1 month ago
thnx giovanni…..yes we all need a reminder here and then…..we must acknowledge and appe=reciate what is “now” as it can all change in a matter of seconds

Heavy, hard and difficult to read….and to view when you know about the subject.
Nature is a cruel and unyielding opponent, Helene.
This painting is highly symbolic of the struggle in your description.
A difficult painting for you to create, but I would think you got some positive therapy (as I do) from the execution (albeit difficult) of the creative process.
Keep well, my friend.
helene ruiz in reply to madvlad’s comment, 29 days ago
