I’ve posted this one before, but I’m reposting because it’s disappeared into the bowels of the archive and I’ve just entered it in the writing competition!

Beached
did i think
if I left my body untended
momentarily
I would lose the way back
drown in my mother’s image
who is lost
and drifting aimlessly
in unknown shoreless seas
did I make
of thought an anchor
and a crown
a heavy chainbound god
to whom I clung
in desperation
bereft
with nothing else
to call my own
the world I inhabit
is not my own
I squat
on the shore
counting and recounting
particles of sand
my father’s house
is crumbling to the ground
if I am finally set adrift
washed free by waves
and pulled
into the tidal swell
all markers will be lost
and I
a piece of driftwood
bleached to bone
might drift to shore again
might not return

Wow! I love that Helene. Thanks for dragging that out of the archives and good luck with the competition! I’ve been thinking about doing some creative writing of my own. I just need a little bit more confidence I think…..

Beautifully written Helene, sad and haunting. I like how you’ve tied the characters in with the landscape.

An amazing piece. I’m conjuring up a refugee. A coincidence that I also wrote about ‘driftwood’!
