Artist's Description

13th Century Gothic (Blackletter) calligraphic piece. Lines taken from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, written in sepia ink on vellum (cowhide) Decorations in gouache, with flat and raised gold illumination. Filigree in the style of The Windmill Psalter 1290.
Original is 24 by 30 cms
It reads:
O she doth teach the torches to burn bright.
She hangs upon the cheek of night as a rich jewel in an ethiops ear.
Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear.
Did my heart love till now forswear it sight, for I never saw true beauty till this night.
