Seeing with senses
This is a short extract from my book ‘only for now’
The eye is the character, constantly absorbing, it can not ‘un-see’ the seen. By ‘Host’ the body is meant, the body that carries the eyes.
‘A tree this is, but not as the one within you,’ refers to something very different, earlier in the book.
Seeing with senses
Join with your other senses, and the world you are in becomes another place. Take for example a picture with two shapes. Both coloured white on a dark background, or in reverse, it does not matter. Two shapes, focus on them, then set your focus on the non-shape. It can appear as a third shape. You can see one or the others. Although three shapes appear to be there, you can ever only see one shape, or the other two at a time.
You will notice the impact it has, when your attention switches from one to the others. The same type of impact it will leave on you, if you look at anything with full awareness of all senses. There is a big difference though. When all senses become aware, you will see the tree, hear it and feel the wind on your skin. You will not stand on the outside looking in, looking at something; you will feel as part of the seen. You become an element within.
It will take some practice. Focus again on the shapes and become aware of the sensation when your focus jumps to the other shape. That moment of sensation is very short.
Look at a tree. Relax. Do not overpower the other senses. Allow them to ‘feel’ the tree. When all senses become aware, that is when the sensation jumps at you. You will not see another shape, as in the black and white image. You will see the tree in its own right. It is no longer an object by the name of tree. It is as if it reveals its spirit. It allows you in its space. You are no longer the onlooker, the stranger passing through, you feel you belong, and you do. You are in the presence of the tree. The tree grows from the ground. You are standing nearby. You can sense the roots underneath your feet. It feels like the change from a flat two dimensional world to a world with depth, like three dimensions. You know three dimensions. This feels like stepping into another. Your host will feel like an invited guest to dwell in the presence of this tree.
Initially that sensation may only last a few seconds and in an instant, it transforms back, into the seemingly flat picture of a tree. You feel that looking at the world will never be the same, once you experience this sensation.
The world to you has always been in three dimensions, but here, with this awareness, another dimension reveals its beauty. You cannot help but sway with the tree, to be as one. Your host will smile in admiration. The gift of presence brings within a harmony of being. The host’s hand will reach out and touch a leaf, a branch or the bark or hug the trunk.
Even if the colours in your rainbow reduce to three, the marvel of your optics has nothing to do with this. The sharpness of your focus is irrelevant. Eyes are not even needed to live the now. Vision is within. A tree this is, but not as the one within you. Train your senses on this tree. Accept the gift of sight, as it was this, it tried to give you long ago.
It is not the tree that you see, that will be so special. It has little to do with the tree. Anything you see will be, as you have never seen.
With this gift, you will see rocks and lizards, flies and blizzards. You will see everything you know in a way you never saw before. You will find and you will lose. What you will lose, you will find anew.
Once you can see, look at the lake again. You had seen it once, at the time when rivers talked with as many sounds, as there are colours in the field.
