At Grannies Door
Behind my Grannies door comes a wealth of love, order, discipline and reward. An old lady knitting her grandchildren bedsocks, afternoon tea with breadbutter custard pie, dark corners for the walking sticks and umbrellas, a place for everything and everything in its place, soft feather doonas for long sleeps and endless cuddles.
My Granny lived to 89 years old, took me across the Nullabor Plain when I was 12 and
bequithed me all the family treasures to keep for all time. My Granny worked in the war, raised a child single handedly, loved only one man in her life and devoted herself to her handywork and my Mother who in turn devoted herself to me.
Blessed are the Grannies of the world with their hairnets and their memories and their beautiful welcomes.
How they are both missed.
