Artist's Description

Inle Lake, Myanmar 2012

The Shan region in Myanmar is the home land to many ethnic minorities (Shan is an ethnic minority) who live in the hills circling the large lake. Foreigners can’t easily access the southern end of the lake (government restrictions etc). The people from the hill tribes come down the markets on the lake for their weekly shopping and to trade their weavings etc.

I was a bit cheeky with this shot, another tourist had asked the woman to pose, so I got a side shot (almost but not quite fitting the candid criteria!), because it was a side shot, there is no background distraction (the market etc) and you can admire the beautiful weaving of her head scarf. So beautiful and foreign to me, but I’m sure Myanmar people are starting to feel like exhibits in a zoo, with people constantly trying to take their photos!
