Callanish Stone Circle - Outer Hebrides

The ancient stone circle at Callanish on the Isle of Lewis in The Outer Hebrides is over 4,000 years old and one of the oldest such structures in the world. Though smaller than Stonehenge it is considerably older and is awe-inspiring to visit. Normally seen in sunshine, here we have a photograph taken beneath an umbrella as a storm passsed overhead giving this magical place an altogether unworldly quality.

Beautiful! I love the moodiness and how ominous it feels. I did a few Stonehenge photos recently myself from a visit to Britain in Dec. There is something about those circles.

These Celtic stone circles (I guess they’re Celtic?) are just enchanting and magical to me. Although I’ve never been able to visit any of these; I really want to. To me they really represent something so primal and spiritual. I have to say that these stones strike me the same way the Anasazi ruins in the American southwest move me. This is an excellent composition, and some terrific light. The stormy sky matches the mood of the stones somehow. Well seen, and captured. Cheers!

    Great photograph!
The curves on the clouds and the way the hill slightly rises to meet them gives a sense of rushing towards the site and stopping instantaneously :)
There’s a lovely sense of tone too… and with the stones it’s almost in reverse. dark and light clouds. dark and light stones.

These remind me of the ringforts I live near.

These things never cease to draw me in, these stone circles. I don’t believe I’ve ever had the pleasure of viewing this one, but you’ve managed to do it an amazing justice here.
