Am I an Artist??
Hello friends,
I am feeling somewhat frustrated at the moment, it could be the pending full moon, or maybe not. I seem to be questioning my art, my style, as I am entering more exhibitions and finding no sales and no prizes. It is all contemporary, abstract, conceptual etc that wins. No traditional realist stuff. Even the traditional shows are now ‘broadening their horizons’ to include non traditional. Why? There are already so many contemporary exclusive or preferred shows with abstracts and the like.
I find myself asking ‘am I a true artist or is what I do no more than a ‘job’ I enjoy.’? I understand the diversity of art and I appreciate and enjoy many styles. But sometimes I just can’t understand what sells and wins. These days the art that does sell and win needs a brochure to explain what it is and what it means. Sooo, I am seriously asking myself ‘WHAT IS ART’?? I am not educated in art. (maybe thats the problem) I don’t know who is who in art. Therefore, apparently, I can hardly call myself a professional artist.
I just love to draw and paint. I love colour and using it in and on many mediums. I love to see beauty in all that is around me and reproduce that (coz that is essentially what I do most of the time….copy)
Is realist art going out of style? Old fashioned? Will it even be classed as ‘art’ in the future? Just my 2 cents worth. Your opinions are welcome :)

I just agree with you ,the people who judge/ run shows/ run galleries that’s what they know ,and see as art. [never give up though.]
apologies atm not able to write.] it’s all in my head.
Heidi Garner replied
Yeah, I had so much more to write….all in my head. As it was that bit seemed to take me a gazillion years to type!! :)

I dont think its you love, it the same everywhere, what it is mainly I think is the critics, who from what i can see know nothing of art, they just pretend too, never give up, or change what you do, your talent is youorown, but if you give up, no one will see it, its better to try and maybe not win or dont and regret it later, becasue you cant turn back time, Dawn
Heidi Garner replied
I don’t think I could change…..maybe experiment and broaden my horizons. Two things remain clear to me, whateva I do I want to enjoy it, and, I will never EVER give up! YAY!!!!!!

gee wizz your work is gorgeous! yep wondrous! just there are no shows etc much about now when I first started 28 years ago there were galleries / shows by the dozens on every corner. things change people want digital cameras/ ipods etc.
dawndavies
good for you, you should not change what you do, its all the rest of them lol lol keep on trying Dawn

PLEASE dont change what you do! you will never please EVERYONE! just because you dont win dosnt mean it isnt good – your work amazes me – alot of the time i dont like what does win & who knows what the judges are looking for – it does come down to an opinion with art – whos to say whos right? you cant say one piece of art is better than another as its all up to individual taste…...................

They say a change is as good as a rest, in art it can work but you must enjoin what you are doing or you will get frustrated. I go from computer art to watercolors that help me. Try something new but in your art style, you are an Artist. Nobody likes to change their style and why should you.
Don’t uses up all the energy getting frustrated put that energy in to your art
You are very good artist
And keep up the great work

I think your art is just beautiful and do not change it in anyway. I agree with you art isn’t art any more. People like you have a gift and to draw and paint like you can is a blessing so don’t give up and I think it is just a phase these judges are going through at the moment and something they will get sick of. I hope real soon.

Dear, dear Heartco…....you are an artist of the finest quality….and don’t you know that all the masters got frustrated, couldn’t sell their work, got depressed and even cut their ear off!! The old masters were ousted when realism came in….a bit like the fine artists and now the digital…...times change…..but the true artist remains a master….sees the beauty and when you look in the palaces of the world…...you will only see the works of masters…..not the digital hoohaw that I create…...but the finest and one day, a gallery will show your fantastic creations…....and you will be glad you remained a master of what you do. The queen loves horses you know….....send her some pictures of yours…...why not…....you never know!! Go for it…..write to galleries…....all of them…..and just wait and see…...your day will come to shine. I adore your work….but most of us on here are struggling so can’t buy all we want to…......so broaden your horizons…....and just wait….....it will happen dear friend.

Sweetheart, You are an Artist!! don’t get confused or worried about it. There are just sooooooooooooo many artists around that it has to be exactly the right time for you to benefit, but when the time is right, wheeeeeeeeeee you will be off. Just do not get disheartened. It will Happen!!!! Blessings

Trends come and go … realism and realistic portrayals will always prevail I think. You have a true talent, you will grow and improve and prevail, don’t be disheartened or distracted. Remain true to what you know is your path … abstract shmabstract!

Take heart … you have amazing skills and a wonderful “realistic style” .. skills that many on redbubble wish they had. Perhaps what may belacking for some viewers (and judges) what’s the narrative or story that underlies this work that makes it different. That may be a background that relates and tells a story behind the primary image or the image placed in a context that tells us more about the animal, flower etc.
Such compositional techniques or “visual story telling” invites the viewer (or judge) to see something other than what they are are already familiar with … it may challenge them to rethink previous perceptions … to learn something new. While skill is valuable in making an image … I personally feel art should challenge and even provoke me to know something new. Just a personal opion .. and written with the best intentions to perhaps assists you in rethinking what art is in this visual filled world of today. mklau

Thankyou for your comment. I guess I am REALLY asking myself, Is what I do art? I may be skilled at using pencils, I may enjoy drawing (and amaze ppl at) the level of detail and realism in my work, but it isn’t anything that u described. My work may be pleasing to the eye, but it doesn’t get anyone thinking, or guessing. Should it? I’m not exactly disheartened…...rather, I’m wondering – is what I do really ‘art’

Don’t doubt yourself Heartco. You are upholding the best of traditional art with your great skills – it’s been around a hell of a lot longer than some of the odd stuff one sees so much of today. There is a very large group of representional artists who would support you and feel the same frustration. Yes, there is certainly some good modern art and it is bringing with it a lot of interest and sales. But there is also a lot of rubbish covering gallery walls which depends on shocking the viewer and shows little talent. There should be room for all styles, but it seems that we traditionists are seeing evidence of being drowned out. It would be a pity if we decide that if we can’t beat them then we must join them.

Thank you everyone. I certainly opened this entry with the right words….. Hello FRIENDS :) I feel humbled. Tomorrow I will read all this and wonder what the hell was wrong with me!!!! Full moon here we come :)

Hello, i looked at your work and it is all a high standard. You are very talented.
My work is very diversified and still hardly any sales. This morning I spoke to a gallery manager and showed her some of my work. She ended up saying that I had been out of it for too long because I decided to have children.
I wont give up and niether will you, you are too talented. I just hope if I stick at for long enough someone, sometime will take notice.

Oh, you’re a great artist, I wish I can draw the way you do, you inspired me to draw the “flower” and the way you draw amaze me, do not loose hope. We are starving artist, we do our best, and hope one day to make money, you are very talented, if you inspired me, it means there are others like me too. I’m seeing works with no talent selling with higher price and makes me feel sad, me that do not have the experiance as you have are spending more time to do something good and nice and beautiful are not appreciated. Wish I can give you a hug.

First and most of all you are one heck of an artist, I really like what you do don’t change your art this is you. I know how frustrating it can get, I believe many artist feel they way we do. I personally don’t have the time for exhibitions or any other activity, but I know that I cannot live without painting. Everything a person does needs 100% input and then lots of luck. I will never understand some of the art that is out there and makes money. Well, I like a flower to look like a flower and a horse like a horse… The first one I have to satisfy is myself…

Don’t change what you do just because someone else says that it is NOT. Who is to say that they know what they’re talking about in the first place. Maybe it turns out that you are the artist & the are just the HACK critic. Keep up the wonderful work.

You are a Great Artist…....

I have just been looking at your work – it’s wonderful – you are very talented heartco. Lots of traditional or realist artist out there (and in here!) would fully agree with your sentiments…but the point is – to thine own self be true! You’re beautiful…I know that because you’re work is beautiful and it comes from within…so let the critics go…they have to come back to quality eventually, and stop acting out the Emporer’s New Clothes!
Estelle O'Brien
hmm I got a bit carried away there..I mean some critics interaction with some modern art is a bit like the Meporer’s new clothes…not you!

Heartco in answer to your questions. Yes you certainly are an artist and with talent admired by myself and others. In answer to “is it art” sure it is. The role of an artist to record realistically their world around them is historically and still today a valid artistic endeavour. Art also is also about exploring your own feelings and responses to your world … not always is it just recording “as is” according to conventions. For me it’s also about using artistic skills to add my personal views and responses to a subject .. to attempt to embed into my images a narrative or story that not only satisfies myself but may attract others. I personall do not exhibit only for the hope of selling work … it’s more important to me to explore “who I am” and “what is my response emotionally to what I am seeing” and perhaps also to provoke in me and others a “new way of sensing, seeing and feeling”. Of course an artist cannot predict the viewers response. Each person’s perception will draw out of the work what they wish to “see” or feel”. I am sometimes very dissappointed with feedback that says “nice”, “cool”, amazing” or I like it” ... thats more about the viewers response and in any case I am more interested in what they see as “nice”, cool or amazing etc. Some in RB are excellent at defining what they like…they detail it and then I am clear about their responses. I also wish for comments that tell me how the image could be improved…(one reason why I have joined the Adult Male … The Critique Forum) . Equally I am not impressed if someone says “I dislike it” My answer is “ok but it would be helpful if you told me specifically why you may not like it” and “ways to improve the image from their perspective”. In my training in art and design we believed (and I still do) that feedback should be (a) about the image (b) be honest© be useable and helpful to the works” we give feedback on.
Perhaps for you and your very skilful images it may be an exciting area to explore for example, the role of horses to you personally or, in history or, even a different perspective? Such as a drawing or painting done from an usual perspective ie. looking at a horse from beneath its head upwards? The choice of course is solely yours as an artist … its a search, often risky, and may fail but I believe in that artistic search comes development. Finally .. YES you are an artist and I like your work now add “magic” to some of the forthcoming images. With sincere intent to assist in your dilemma, best regards mklau (Michael)
