Great shot, Hélène, I love the high contrast which suggests a glaring sun! I went to look up ‘kadhima’ and stumble onto this thread which I thought you might enjoy (I have not even seen all 9(!) pages of it yet!)
Hello Marjolein, thanks for the link, great shots ! Kuwait sure doesn’t look any more like that. I had seen some pictures on Flickr but there must be thousands more on the web. Love these old fashioned car that you still could see in Damascus (Syria) a few years ago, until they decided to destroy them to conform to international standards on pollution…. Kadhima is a place on the northern coast of Kuwait bay where a british team of archaeologists is presently surveying and excavating early islamic sites (the well on my picture is one of these, probably a stopover on the caravans routes between Mesopotamia and Arabia as they found structures meant for camels to drink). But it’s not even the beginning of the story, other sites were found nearby that date back to the… 5th millennium BC !
Very interesting stuff, Hélène! Those tumuli remind me of a series of (apparent) tumuli graves and large patterns or ‘drawings’ of stones laid out on the ground we saw in 2009 in Tajikistan, near Kara-Kul on the High Pamirs plain. I have no idea whether they were ever excavated. The site was marked though, and there were paths marked out to walk on to prevent people to walk all over features that may not be obvious otherwise. (I have some decent pictures, but given the time of day and my low to the ground position it’s not easy to see the actual shapes.)

You have been chosen for our first February features. Well Done!
