Theses arches are what’s left of the ceiling of a water cistern, in a ruined city dating back to the roman and byzantine periods (beginning of the 1rst mill. AD) in the desert between Syria and Jordan. This area was particularly important in Antiquity, as all the caravans crossing the arabian desert to join south Arabia were originating, or ending, there.
It looks like a big Camel feet with wonderful passage for humans in between. excatly as the name sais ..Umm el-jimal
Hadn’t thought of the camel but you’re right Alain. I thought the name of the city came from its location at the beginning of the caravans road to the south of Arabia through Mekka, and the symbolism of camel must have been very strong there while the whole life of the city relied on this animal.
well it is getting on a bit and needs some help these days ;) Great composition again Helene, you paying these people to walk into shot at the right time?
Don’t have to be so commercial ! Arab people are extremely kind, their honour is at stake when they meet somebody in the need of something, and they can recognize a photographer who is desparately in need of a passerby…
